Linux headscratcher now.

Thread Starter
I have been folding on my Ubuntu linux box for a while now, but I took the old cooler off the CPU, installed a closed loop water solution and fired it back up. I reconfigured my client back to normal "-smp 4 -verbosity 9".

The problem I am having now is that my client doesn't even get through the first frame when it says, "NOTE Turning on dynamic load balancing." Soon after this message pops up, my box freezes up. No crashing, but my keyboard and mouse are unresponsive. Ctl Alt F1 doesn't work, cant open terminal. I have not seen this dynamic load balancing message before, so I suspect it has something to do with that.

I am running Ubuntu 11.1- fully updated using update manager & proprietary nvidia drivers installed.
Specs are:
PII x4 940 @3.6Ghz
4Gb 800Mhz Corsair Dominators
8800GTS

Can you record the tempretures please of when folding? Have you correctly seated the cooler and applied the right ammount of Thermal grease?

Check to make sure the cpu is all the way in the socket, and the underside doesn't have any TIM on it. Also with the closed loop cooler you don't get the airflow from the cooler going over the vrm,NB, and ram. Make sure they aren't over heating.

Everything checks out in terms of temps and hardware, I can fold fine and am currently in win 7, I just hate the hit in PPD. ):

Try reinstalling linux or doing a bios clear. Then if not dismount the heatsink clean of the Thermal and start again.

Dynamic load is something in linux that is just organizing the multi threading to make it more efficient I believe. Sounds like a hardware problem almost as just when the computer really starts to kick up with work it freezes up. Check the ram is seated properly and may want to run memtest on it to make sure there are no bad spots.

Also consider installing windows to help trouble shoot the problem. Linux can be a little tricky to deal with and you will be able to run some torture tests/benchmarks.

Also would be interested to hear how water has changed your folding performance. I have been thinking about going water for a little while however I am a poor college student and my case is not WC friendly.

The load balancing thing is a Linux thing as far as I know and nothing to worry about. Have you ried setting it back to stock clocks to eliminate the OC?

Well, today I learned that a rock solid overclock in windows does not translate to a solid oc in Linux. I ran both p95 for an hour and finished a work unit for about an hour and a half. I backed off the overclock to 3.5GHz and its been crunching away for the night now. + rep
