Building a PC - Wait for Ivy Bridge?

Thread Starter
Well, I'm set on buying a new desktop for the rest of year 12 and Uni. Obviously I'm not going to have time to worry about upgrading my motherboard/ cpu because there are new ones out, so I have a question for you guys. I'm looking at a i7-3930k with an ASUS Sabertooth motherboard. Will Ivy Bridge use the X79 platform and the 2011 socket when they are released, or is there going to be a whole new socket/ platform?

One other question which I pose to you is what benefits will Ivy Bridge have over Sandy Bridge? And will a i7-2600k last me for the next 3 - 4 years as well as a 3930k will? I am only a student so I don't need the BEST, but I don't want something that is going to be obsolete in 6 months. And another question (one question turns into three, I know) would I be better off just waiting for the Ivy Bridge CPU's to come out? From my understanding the socket 2011 cpu's that are out now are for work. Lot's of work, and they may be overkill for me. Opinions?

ivy bridge is a die shrink with probably 10 percent increases in some scenerios over SB. No major improvements.

Socket 2011 is overkill, just really for high end gamers or graphic professionals needing the rendering power.

Intel's newest generation of CPU's comes out in 2013, codenamed Haswell. Should support Thunderbolt and PCIE3 natively.

Basically a 2500k will be fine for at least 2-3 years, so if need something now get it.

Should he go X79, or not..?

Why shouldn't he(?), the i7 3820 is roughly $300 bucks...fast enough for a year (or two), until the 6-core Ivy's are out (in full force on the X79 platform).

technology is fast pace so expect it change as expected every 6 months or so but if you are going to buy now hold it, see what's ivy bridge is performing its just around by april or so, as compared to current release of lga 1155 & 2011.

Just to confirm one of my questions though; will Ivy bridge use the LGA2011 socket and will one of the platforms used for it be X79?

Ivy Bridge -E will use the 2011 socket, as to support for x79 i can only speculate that it will..
standard Ivy bridge will be the same as sandy bridge and use the 1155 socket.
after this the next Tock will be Haswell and the socket will change again to be the lga1150 thumb.gif

What do you plan on using your desktop for? 6-core now is pointless if you won't utilize it, seeing how Ivy Bridge will increase performance on <= 4 threads by 15-20% (estimated, including overclock headroom). Personally, I'd want to go into university with bleeding edge hardware, not last-gen stuff.

Well, obviously university work (word processing and excel mainly I ASSUME, hopefully getting into mechanical engineering) but possibly as a drafting PC as well, although quad cores can run CAD fine. Anyway, the 2011 socket CPU I was looking at was the i7 3820, so it's still a quad core. But I might as well wait for ivy bridge, if it will use the 1155 socket. And they'll still be quad cores (the ivy bridge) just with enhanced performance over a sandy bridge? I thought I read somewhere that some ivy bridge CPU's will be 8 cores. Oh well, there's no harm in waiting a few months, still a good 10 months or so before I go to uni.

yeah, after reading some stuff on the I7 3820 and its price being $300 and change, it is well worth it.. probably could be the next best bang for buck cpu atm.. anyway this track can build you a cheap beast of SB-E and prepare you for IB-E Octos thumb.gif

just see how easy the i7 3820 overclocks thumb.gif
