Folding for free on Amazon EC2 cloud services. Don't DO IT(Its useless).

So if you don't already know Amazon has a free tier on their EC2 service, its a pretty much a really low end virtual server running either Linux or Windows Server. The servers have 30GB of storage, 613 MB of memory, and one virtual core(really just access to shared processing with multiple other could servers on one physical core.) To be honest these servers are kinda fun to play on but are slow.

To get to the point I decided to see what they could do in regards to folding. Pretty much they cant, it ties the server up so badly you cant SSH into it and have to kill the instance to regain access. I reviewed the folding logs and saw that in one day on a unicore client it reached about 15% but ate up 750,000 out of the free 2million I/Os they give you a month.

If your willing to pay though they have some cluster GPU instances for $2.10 an hour or cluster CPUs for $2.40 an hour.

If anyone's interested to try these servers.

Ya thats the problem with amazon as I see it. They charge by the hour instead of just a monthly subscription with unlimited use. Their model is great if you just have to run a few tests that will take a coupe of hours ever now and then. However as far as folding goes that is way to expensive to make it worth while.

I am hoping that HPCS is going to fix this and offer some kind of monthly price for use of x cores and x amount of ram. If their private beta resources are an indication they may be reasonable priced.
