I think the last person that tried to share some top secret Nvidia benchmark results had their hands chopped off

Personally, anyone calling this a mid range part is rubbish. It is not in ES status yet and just taped out, IIRC. Using that argument, the 7970 is a mid range part because Sea Islands is coming out in Q4 rolleyes.gif

No one's being deceived.... GK110 is going to be their "uber-card" i.e. top-end, but the mid-high-end GK104 is a high-mid-range part. It has not "just taped out"... hyperbole is wonderful though, eh? 7970 is THE top AMD chip, and is their current generation... GK104 is part of the current coming nVidia generation as is GK110. Sea Islands would be next-gen past this, so no, 7970 is not their "mid-range" part for this gen. I can't wait to see GK104, I have a feeling a pair of them's going to be a treat at a much better price than the 7970 (15-20% faster 14 months later, LOL).

generations are defined by fabrication processes, not arbitrary numbering schemes. the gk104 is nvidia's current high-end card, the ones in the future will be a revised version. but by that time AMD will have 89xx cards as well.

Unfortunately, the determination of where a GPU falls into the current market spectrum is what is released. If GK104 is released tomorrow, that is their new high end card. There is no GK110. If GK104 is the highest NV card on the market, while the GK110 is nowhere in sight you do the math. You can't call an unreleased part the high end.

And in response to your snide remark at the end, you're saying this while the GK110/112 is a known release for Q3-Q4? It appears to be pretty ironic that it will take nvidia until late Q3 to top the 7970. Perhaps the GK110 will be "15-20% faster 14 months later, LOL" thumb.gif

All that said, I don't have anything against NV and i'm looking forward to the GK104 as well. I hope to be pleasantly surprised because i'm sick of the rumors and BS guerilla marketing that NV is doing.
