Windows SSD slowly filling up.

I got a crucial M4 64 GB a couple months ago to use as a boot driver for Windows 7. I haven't put anything else on the drive except Windows so after install I think it was around 30 GB full. Since that time it's been creeping up to around 34-35 GB. I never install anything to the SSD drive. The only thing on it are drivers from Nvidia and chrome browser, other than that every single other install I've done of any program or anything else has been to my other HDD.

When I intially installed the SSD I did most of the things in Sean's Optimization Thread. I know this isn't a big deal that it's just regular stuff from Windows that is filling up the SSD but I'm just wondering if there is something else I'm missing? Is there something I need to disable to clear every once in a while? Like I said I did do most things from the guide.

I know it's not good to keep Windows boot drivers 100% full and I'm going to actually use the space that's left on the SSD as soon as I can find a game that would really benefit from it.

Bugs me to see my SSD filling up with random stuff especially when I can't delete the random stuff.

Two questions.

Did you turn off system restore?

Did you reduce pagefile size to 512mb min and 512mb max?

Same thing is happening to my Force 3 120gb.

A few weeks ago it sat at about 21GB free, i have installed practically nothing and my recycle bin is empty, now it is at 16.1GB. It is not system restore or hibernation, i can say that much.

I'm providing it as an alternate to Sean's guide as I was using it well before Sean made his guide and have no issues.

That being said, I'm pretty sure it contains the same tweaks as sean's does but perhaps something that you thought you turned off didn't get turned off.

I figured it out

Even though I had hibernation disabled, (it dont show up in start menu) there was still hiberfil.sys.

Anyway, launch command prompt as administrator, and type in powercfg -h off

It should appear to do nothing, but look at the free space of your ssd and you will see it has increased by about 5-6gb -/+ a few gb.

EDIT: Kinda ninja'd

Page file, temp internet files, temp downloads(updates),hyberfil. backup-restore. These are the main windows storage space whores. I used to set my temp internet files real small, but I have gone back to having 2 Gb for it, really speeds up browsing any pages you have visited before. Another space whore is Google Earth (and probably other map type site-programs), if you have large cache size set. With 4 Gb of RAM you do need to keep a page file as some games will need it (also some older games REQUIRE a page file- even if it is small- otherwise you will get BSOD), the 512 Mb suggestion is probably enough ( I have mine @ 2 Gb), Windows will set it @ 1.5x your RAM amount if left as system managed.

Another thing that can eat up space is unnecessary windows updates- particularly the language packs. These alone can take up several Gb and not many people need every language known to man on their rigs.

Try going over the maintenance part of my guide? Space Sniffer may help find a random file that is taking up space. I found two old RAMDisk ISO's I forgot about before.

CCleaner:
CCleaner has to be the best "cleanup" utility I have ever used, it cleans up all your temp files and cleans your registry better than any other software I know. I have never had an issue with it over the last two years of using it. I have tried many others and CCleaner has come out to be the best. I highly recommend you use this as your sole maintenance cleanup software over everything else.

Disk Cleanup:
This is the integrated Disk Cleanup in Windows 7. I often use this after using CCleaner just in case CCleaner misses anything. Does a good job and I recommend you use it too.
  1. Open the Start Menu, type Disk Cleanup, press Enter
  2. Select your drive you want to "clean"
  3. Check any of the boxes you wish (I check them all)
  4. Click OK
  5. Click "Delete Files"

Disk Defragment for HDDs
Haven't really had a need to use anything other than the built in disk defragmenter in Windows. It works good for me and since it is integrated I don't need to waste space on getting any 3rd party software.
  1. Open the Start Menu, type Disk Defragmenter, press Enter
  2. Select your drive you want to defragment
  3. Click "Defragment Disk"
    Note: Do not defragment your SSD, it does absolutely nothing beneficial for it.

Empty windows update download cache:
This is a safe and easy way to get rid of any left over windows update files.
  1. Go to: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
  2. Delete all of them.

Revo Uninstaller:
Best Uninstaller app I have used so far, does a great job at keeping my uninstalls clean and such.

Remove Start up Items and more:
This is one of my favorite apps, just uncheck an item you wish to disable and it won't run upon start up. This can decrease your boot time as well as become a great troubleshooting tool.

Add Start up Items:
To add items to your start up this is an easy way to do it, just drag and drop a shortcut into this folder.
  1. For an individual user go to: C:\users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
  2. For all users go to: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Space Sniffer:
Cool app that lets you see what is taking up your space on your system and manage it.
