Is Ubuntu really a resource hog?

I got Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on the following machine:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 @ stock
HD 5850
Gigabyte 790FX UD5
2 x 2GB

Crucial M4 64GB - OS
5 x 2 TB WD EARX - Raid 5 array

I always have atleast between 30-40% CPU usage without any programs running. Because Zacate is more power efficient and great for SFF set-ups I've been thinking about getting an E350 system. But when I always get such a high CPU usage, a Zacate probably won't be able to handle it.

Could there be something wrong or is such a CPU usage normal for Ubuntu with a raid 5 array?

I've never had any issues with it being a resource hog.

Are you using a real RAID card or just mdadm?

I've got Ubuntu on several older machines without any issues of Hogging.

Even since 9.xx Ubuntu is has been a major resource hog on my pentium 3 laptops we are talking way back in 05 when P3s were still relevant as web surfing machines. I have seen lighter OSes. My guess is with such small CPU it may be the raid like i said that raid card would speed things up for sure regardless of software issue or weak hardware.

even pre-9x releases, Ubuntu was noticeably sluggish compared with many other distros

I use ubuntu 10.04 everyday on my sig rig, I have very little cpu usage, but I don't run an array either so that could be the problem tho I really don't think it is. IMO 10.04 is the best ubuntu release ever and I'm not looking forward to it going EOL.

you also have blazing fast e8400 were talking about an os that is supposed to support a whole array of hardware including older and slower stuff.

I've never experienced this and I recently (yesterday) had Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS installed. The system is very responsive and usually under 10% CPU usage at all times. It sounds like you have some process that keeps sucking up the CPU even while idling at desktop. Check your process in system monitor and see what's going on. It's not normal.

You may want to consider using another version of Ubuntu. I chose Lubuntu and Xubuntu, both are nice streamlined systems. IMO Gnome and KDE are becoming far too bloated to be any good.

there is a good chance it is the software raid hence why i suggested the rocketraid. also with such a small cpu i might expect not much more than 14% cpu usage at idle normally.

If you don't have a dedicated $100+ RAID card, you are most likely running a software RAID, and 5 discs in RAID 5 will definitely eat up a good chunk of resources. Even 2 drives in Drive Mirror using WHS 2011's built in tools takes up to 20% on an Athlon II X3 440 when copying files to it.
