water cooling benefit to folding

Thread Starter
Just a quick question about watercooling and the benefits to folding/overclocking in general. I have never watercooled but am getting kind of bored with lack of projects to do so I was thinking about jumping in. A poor college student so I was looking at using http://www.frozencpu.com/products/12222/ex-wat-162/XSPC_Rasa_750_RS360_Universal_CPU_Triple_Radiator_Water_Cooling_Kit_w_Free_Kill_Coil.html?tl=g30c321#blank. This seems like a good budget WC setup.

My main problems are I have a Coolmaster storm scout case which is not the best for watercooling and might need some modding to make it work. I would probably end up with the rad on the outside as the case does not have a lot of room. Anyone have any experience with using this case?

Should I go for it? Are there going to be any real benefits to watercooling and folding performance?

Thanks for the help this is my first time creating a thread here on OCN rolleyes.gif I usually prefer to help other rather than ask questions

I don't know a whole lot about specific WC kits or anything like that so I'll let someone more experienced tell you more about that kit, or you can try the WC section.

As far as general benefits to a well set up WC loop for folding would be noise and temperature reduction. The noise could be a big gain if you have one of the hotter/louder running GPUs folding 24/7 as I do but in my experience 460s are pretty quiet. The temperature decrease on the CPU and GPU or whatever you decide to WC, should allow you to clock higher which would would increase PPD. Normally the increased PPD from the higher ability to OC will not be as great as if you had spent the same money on new or more hardware, for example an additional 460 would cost less than the WC kit but would give you ~10-12K PPD while you likely won't see that kind of increase from a higher OC of current hardware. So in my opinion the big benefit of WC when it comes to folding is the noise reduction, the higher OCs are nice but not worth the cost in the grand scheme of things, again IMO.

For a cpu folding rig I would say no.

If you would also be cooling GPU's then yes it's worth it but Sandy/Ivy Bridge runs so cool your cpu will reach it's max clock before a good cooler like the d14 or Silver Arrow will.

Just a quick addition: if you are cooling your gpu to eliminate fan noise while folding, don't forget you will still have coil whine squealing in the background. Not a whole lot you can do about that, except maybe superglue your capacitors. LOL

As juano I feel the biggest gain going with watercooling is the potential in reduced noise while still having a very good cooling. All hardware doesn't react the same to cooler running, AMD CPUs seems to like the cold and being able to reduce the vcore for the same OC if you get the temps down.

Full Auto should be called Rasa FAH Team. Several of their members have the Rasa kit IIRC.

You could always throw 10lbs of sound deadening foam into your case, but who would do that? Surely not me.

Wow and just lost my response for a second time. Chrome when I dont care you keep my comments but when I do you screw me....So thanks for all the responses I appreciate it.

Some of you seemed indicated that WC will help keep my ambient temp down is this true? Summer will bring temps well into the 100s for me. The temperatures in my room have been in the low 90s during summer but with two computers folding I am expecting at least 10-20F difference. The lower I can get the better.

I am fine spending 100-150$ on water cooling if it will help with my overall situation of heat. While I would love to get a 460 from newegg or somewhere else I cant really afford it (hint hint folders trying to sell you 460s to another folder) unless I get it 110 or less. The added WUs would be nice. If I could get a second GPU with a water block I would be fine cooling both. Although the rad would probably not be big enough in the setup I linked.

Also anyone have any experience with a rad stand of some sort. I might be able to point it out a window and direct most of the computer heat out the window.

You'd still have the same amount of heat to deal with, however it can be easier to direct the heat where outside you case or out of you window as you suggest. As your ambient temps will rise in the summer WC can help you keep the hardware under its thermal limit.

Ya i figured logically there would be the same heat but maybe if i bought extra tubing I would be able to point it out a window that would help.

As for the overclocking any thoughts about how far I might be able to push my processor? It seems to have hit a wall at about 4.8 with a vcore of 1.4 but I don't feel comfortable running it at that on air. Will I be able to push it up much higher?
