Yeah, If it's the booting hard drive with the OS already installed from the desktop you need to just completely reinstall Windows for correct drivers etc etc.

Ok thank you all for the replies. I would have tried this already but as I'm in the process of moving my windows cd (and all my other old software cds/drivers/manuals) are in storage. I'll just borrow one from a friend and hopefully all will be all right.
