Critique this A8-3850 Build Please

Thread Starter
This is for my father in law......his old computer caught a nasty virus and he just wants something new. He was looking at off the shelf stuff but came to me knowing I like to build and figured I could do better for a comparable price. So here's what I'm looking at. After much deliberation between the Intel vs. AMD processor battle, and comparing performance, price, etc, I settled on going with AMD for his generic usage being mainly internet browsing video watching. He wants a quick, reliable computer, isn't concerned with overclocking or upgrading, and doesn't game. Plus, this is a budget build........was trying to stick around a $500 or so price point. So......on to the components.

Case -- Xigmatek Asgard Pro -- Really like the looks of this case (Fractal Knock Off Anyone?)

Processor -- AMD A8-3850 -- Quad Core, Low power, decent integrated graphics processor.

Heatsink/Fan -- Stock AMD A8-3850 due to no overclocking or anything

Motherboard -- Asus F1-A75M

Hard Drive -- Mushkin Enhanced Chronos 60GB SATA III -- Great reviews and performance

RAM -- G.Skil Ripjaw 8GB (4GB x 2) 1866 -- Going higher speed to take advantage as it boost graphics performance apparently.

PSU -- Raidmax Hybrid 2 RX-530SS -- Cheap, but MODULAR, power supply with decent reviews. Worth a shot.

DVD Drive -- ASUS DRW-24B1ST -- Highly reviewed, nuff said. No need for a BD-ROM or anything, he says he's got a blu ray player for that. Okie dokie.

Toss in a rosewill SATA III cable, and we're looking at just over $494 all at New Egg, though I'll be shopping around on prices. The downer is that this DOESN'T include a copy of Win7. I have a XP-Pro copy all slipsteamed and ready to go with SATA stuff, but it's only 32 bit and won't recognize the full ram. I'm going to try to talk him into $600 to do it or else we'll have to cut some corners somewhere. Only other thing I'd need to coerce him into is potentially a second 500 GB to 1 TB drive for storage, but I need to see how much space he's actually going to be utilizing.

So, what's the consensus on the build? See any major flaws?? I'll be adding a couple of extra case fans (side door, top panel) to make sure cooling is adequate, but I'm looking for anything glaring that I've overlooked. Thanks y'all!

I'm sorry, but that Logisys PSU is absolute crap. It can probably output about 250W on a good day before going out of ATX spec.

At this price range, a Corsair CX430V2 should be a no-brainer.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026&Tpk=cx430v2

For comparison, the "575W" Logisys only has 25A available on the +12V rail, where things like CPU/GPU draw power. The CX430V2 has 28A on the +12V rail.

Thanks for that! The case is gonna be a bit much for his taste i think, and I actually swapped PSU decision to the 430 watt corsair builder series. Never thought to check for the mono deal, good heads up! I built two VERY similar systems last night, the other was $500 on the mode but an I3-2025 and am now torn. Then factor in that I have a semi-local Microcenter where I can actually bump to an I5-2400 and open box mobo for about $225 and the conundrum begins again. Gotta see what the F-I-L thinks and just pull the trigger on what he's willing to spend.

*edit* 996gt2, that's the exact PSU I decided on.

If you can get the i5-2400 setup for about the same price, then I'd say go for it. It will be more futureproof than an AMD APU build, but I'm not sure that will really matter since your FIL is mainly planning to use it for web browsing and nothing too CPU-intensive.

If you want to save a bit on the case, the NZXT Source 210 is good at $40:

I like NZXT stuff and have a White H2 Classic personally, but the Source 210 just looks funky to me, lol. I'm really hung on that Xigmatec for this build.

Combo deals ftw.

If he doesn't game or anything, just get a 2x2gb DDR31600 kit. More than enough. He won't be browsing or watching videos any faster lol redface.gif

You could also get those Samsung 1600mhz modules I've seen floating around. Apparently they overclock like CRAZY which I know you don't want to do, but to get memory running at rated speeds, you "overclock" it anyway. But really, 4gb is plenty.

You also won't need extra fans...The computer sounds like it won't even really be stressed. A single 120mm fan with decent cable management should suffice. If you do go ahead with these savings I mentioned, you should be able to squeeze in Windows 7.

Get a case with free shipping?

Save another $10 with either of those. There all pretty similar.

The PSU is meh, but seems to get enough decent reviews like you said.

Don't those integrated graphics chips need to share the ram?? Hence the 8gb, so I could toss 1-2 gigs at the video and have 6-7 left over. I hadn't checked the combo deals for the APU, I don't know why. Will readdress that. Right now we're probably close to going I3 or I5 at this point because it's so little more.
