[CNN et al] WikiLeaks begins disclosing Stratfor's e-mails

The website WikiLeaks has begun releasing what it says are 5 million e-mails from the private intelligence company Stratfor, starting with a company "glossary" that features unflattering descriptions of U.S. government agencies.

In a statement released early Monday in Europe (Sunday evening ET), the website promises a raft of juicy disclosures about Stratfor, a Texas-based firm that promotes itself to corporate and government clients as a source of intelligence on international affairs. The company has been targeted by hackers who have released private data about subscribers in recent months, prompting the company to offer its clients a year of paid identity-protection coverage.

Surprised nobody has posted it, unless they have and it has been removed (so I apologize to mods beforehand.) This follows a breach that occurred last December if I remember correctly.

Please do not discuss politics, piracy, pro-AnonSec, flammable/trolling opinions, and anti-ToS topics. This is a news item. Consider the implications of your comments as this is really important news to follow and it does OCN credit to be able to follow these topics maturely. This is a big one that will more than likely re-kindle a lot of Internet control conversations here in the US.

Sounds familiar.

I'm all for exposing dark secrets and irresponsible parties, but I don't know enough about any of it to decide if it is good or bad for me.

Another thing to be cautioned is data manipulation... any of it could have been edited. WikiLeaks as a reliable source of information is possible, but its not a guaranteed thing.

I trust them more than the official government channels anyway. They back things up with pictures, recordings and signed forms. The government? Well, they simply speak.

Of course it wasn't encrypted, it was downloaded from their Exchange server. Fox is dumb.

They just gained access to the mailbox of some employee and downloaded the email that was still saved on the server.

Well I think that there's only one appropriate response for this:

I re-read it and that is obvious now - it is funny how easy it is to get spun. I need to read more carefully, and people should write clearly.

edit - doesn't sound like just the exchange server:

...had stolen emails and credit-card data from STRATFOR's web site.[10] According to the one page that remained at STRATFOR's web site, the "Site is currently undergoing maintenance[:] Please check back soon".[11] The hackers claimed to have retrieved the company's client list and used stolen credit card information to make donations to various charities.[11] The hackers claimed to have retrieved over 200 gigabytes of data.[12] The hackers stated that Stratfor was "clueless...when it comes to database security". The passwords were not encrypted[13] and many of the passwords were simply the name of the company.[12] The failure to encrypt the passwords was called "an embarrassing mistake for a company specializing in security" by Zoe Fox of CNN
