can't decide on new motherboard...help

Thread Starter
over the weekend i had some trouble with my current board (http://www.overclock.net/t/1220411/gigabyte-ethernet-port-issue) so i've been debating on buying a new motherboard and rma'ing this board but i can't decide which one i want to get. i would like to overclock the cpu i currently have to ~4.7/4.8ghz

dual lan ports are a plus
pcie ports running at x16 in dual link mode (not necessary)
switchable bios
z68 chipset is a must
pcie 3.0 is not necessary
must be a non-gigabyte motherboard.

the only 2 that really meet these qualifications (some, but not all of them) are the maximus IV extreme-z or the asrock extreme 7 gen 3

pro's and con's of each board and their respective manufacturer would be appreciated.

i dont know about everyone else but i personally agree with those two choices. thumb.gif both are pretty strong boards. especially the asus. drool.gif

im leaning more towards the asus board as well as it has the bios flashback whereas the asrock does not. that and i'm more familiar with the asus brand name than i am with asrock.

The ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z is a nice board but it's not a GEN3 board. I'd go for the ASRock Extreme 7 Gen 3 board. And save some cash going that way as well.

For a ASUS gen 3 board I'd go for this one.....http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131791

As said before me both are strong boards, off-course Asus is better but more expensive....

But if you're really not into running 3x graphic cards in CF/SLI then my recommendation is Asus P8Z68-V /Gen3 (190$ on Newegg)..

It has everything from SATA3/USB3 etc to CF/SLI support (PCIE slots running @ 8x with two graphic cards)..

I have P8Z68-V PRO/Gen3 and it's great..

GEN3 boards mean what exactly?

edit: nevermind. a quick google search tells me it would possibly support ivy bridge cpu's and pcie 3.0. yes?

Well Gen 3 will most likely support ivy bridge and newer video cards, The Asrock had PCI 3 so it can support the 7970

"By adapting PCI-E 3.0 quick switch IC onboard, the ASRock Z68 EXTREME7 GEN3 can support the next-generation PCI-E 3.0! PCI Express 3.0 can maximize the bandwidth for the next-gen PCI Express 3.0 VGA cards, provide ultimate graphics performance. (Note: To run the PCI Express 3.0 slots in Gen 3 speed, CPU supporting PCI Express 3.0 is required. If you install the Sandy Bridge CPU, the PCI Express 3.0 slots will run only at Gen2 speed.)"
I'm pretty sure any Z68 SLI/CF board will let you OC your CPU to 5.0 and fit your bill aout of both mobos mention in OP Extreme 7 would be my choice (NF200 -SLI x16x16) better bang for your buck

P.S. as for PCI-E 3.0 most of today's GPU's still can't saturate current 16 lines available

Ive had quite a bit experience with ASrock. Really good quality boards, super easy bios gui. Not to mention its a Gen3. Cant say much about Asus. Never bought a product from them.

for me between those two boards, it really comes down to if i want a switchable bios or if i want both of my gpus to run in x16 instead of x8. i really like the thought of having a switchable bios in case of fubar, and i dont quite yet have plans to upgrade to ivy as soon as its out so i wouldnt be able to take advantage of pcie 3.0 right away.
