Sata III Speeds on P55 Chipset

Thread Starter
Is it possible to achieve Sata III speeds using an Evga P55 Classified motherboard that only supports Sata II.

I bought a pci-e card that gave me a supposed 5Gb\sec but benchmarks showed far less.

Naturally i am not interested in cards that cost as much as a new Z68 board but something sub $100 would work.

No, a Sata II connection on a motherboard won't run at Sata III speeds.

Yes, a SATA III PCI-E Sata card will run at Sata III speeds. If it's not giving you SATA III speeds, then it's a misunderstanding on how your testing for speed or how to set up your drive. Let me know the exact SSD speed test your using, and the drive you are using it on.

Are they 4 Kb random writes? 4K random reads? 128 sequential writes? 128 sequential reads? Is TRIM enabled? What's your que depth? Did you run free space consolidation on the drive? Are you over-provisioning it? ect...

Perhaps I should have clarified.
I realize my board only supports Sata II. I want a pcie card that gives me full 6gbs. I bought a pcie Sata III card but using crystalmark I only get mid 200's from a Kingston hyper x Sata III drive.
I installed win 7 and ran the test. Nothing else on the drive and I do not believe it has trim support since it is on an expansion card.

I have been told there are $600 cards that will give me Sata III but obviously I am not going to buy that. Since I could buy a new 1155 setup for the same.

You have a 6 Gbps SATA III PCI card that isn't running at SATA III speeds, correct? You want advise for a new card to buy, correct?

Use IO meter, and perform a 128 KB sequencial write and read. Look at your speeds for a que depth of 4 or more. Then do the same for a 2MB read/write. Tell me if your seeing the correct speeds.

I assume you are using a EGVA 160-LF-E659-KR P55 Classified. Just checking,.....you don't have a tripple crossfire or SLi setup, correct? And this PCI-E card is not plugged into the black colored slot, correct?

What is the model of the PCI-E card you are using?

No PCI-E 1x (2.0) card will ever give you a full 6Gbps of bandwidth because a PCI-E 1x slots tops out at 5Gbps.

Even if the slot wasn't a bottleneck, there is going to be some inefficiencies and overhead from the controller. Even if there weren't overhead from the controller, the theoretical maximum performance of drive's interface doesn't always have much of anything to do with the performance of the drive itself.

The Kingston HyperX drives are pretty good, and do come quite close to maxing out the SATA III spec at around 550MB/s in ideal conditions, but your conditions are not ideal, and your performance does not seem far from what I would expect.

It might be worth seeing if you can get your hands on newer drivers, but don't expect miracles.
