Old monitor dying.. looking for new!

Hello all!

My old monitor, an older Hanns-g 28" (older model no longer sold, not the current one being sold still) is dying. It goes black every so often then comes back (the rest of windows doesn't crash, just the screen fails to show). It also makes weird popping noises at times when the screen changes (like say, going fullscreen in some games). I've been advised it's a backlight problem, but I think I'll just get a new monitor. Knowing my luck, that'll be cheaper tongue.gif

With that in mind, I was wondering what to get. I am a gamer first and foremost, and I watch movies. I don't do any editing or stuff of the sort, and care nothing for 3D (i have glasses, and 3d gives me headaches tongue.gif).

I was looking at 27" screens again, but I'd go down to 24" if that works best (and is cheaper, I think), as the resolution ends up not being that different. (unless I wanted 2048 resolution, but those are 30" which are too expensive.).

I also plan to buy a second one for dual screening, and possibly (but not sure) a third.

With all that in mind, are there any recommendations people can give? And why? smile.gif

Thanks a million!

(note: this is in europe. I'd be buying for shipping in Ireland, so recommendations would have to be limited to what's here.. and not newegg, sadly tongue.gif)

"1200p" 120Hz monitor?

Edit: Wait, I don't think those are made yet.
Do you mind having a 1920x1080 res monitor?

Samsung s27a750D (glossy screen)...best 27" gaming monitor on the market if you got cash. It's 120hz...so yes, it can do 3D...but that's not the reason most of us get it. 120hz makes gaming really nice. I know tigerdirect sells if for $399 when it's in stock in the USA..but it normally goes for like $550. I'm not sure if it's available at your location. There is also the 950D version..that has a different stand... probably easier to fine...but the stand has been known to cause screen issues sometimes. They also sell both 750D/950D in 23" verisons...there is also 700D that is just 23" ....all are the same great screen quality. research them yourself before you buy..they all have a different style/ports.

Also, check out the ASUS VG278H or Acer America HN274Hbmiiid...they might fit you better...but I have no idea how good or bad it is (seems fine based on newegg reviews). Both are 120hz 27"...still very good, just not as good. might be easier to find...still expensive though.

Lastly, for 24" 120hz look at the BenQ XL2420...it's the best matted gaming monitor...has a lot of good features as well.

120hz is the way to go for gaming..if you can push past 60fps....I'd take a look at those 5 monitors I mentioned...see whichever you can find where you are.

Oh wow, very detailed. I'd actually looked at some IPS and whatnot, I'd had my eye on the 950D but wasn't sure. As for BenQ, I've only recently heard/seen about the company, how good are they really? (I'd have wanted to stick to samsung/asus/etc, the big names, but if it's really that good..)

My sig rig is what I have, which I think should get to 60fps easily enough.

tbh, im not sure..I've never owned BenQ before. I know there last version, the BenQ 2410, had quite a few issues...but the new version, BenQ 2420, has been getting good reviews..it has some very good features. But if you want to go with 27" (or 23")...i'd try to find the 750D. If you want matted screen than go BenQ..or if you want a 24" monitor. At the 23" - 24" it all comes down to preference between Samsung and BenQ..both are very good..so i've heard. At 27"..try to stick with the 750D if you can.

PS - even at 60fps or lower..the 120hz still helps out vs. 60hz. There are just diminishing returns on the benefit of 120hz when you get very low fps..or very high fps...but it's def. worth getting for gamers!

http://www.overclockers.co.uk and amazon.co.uk are probably my best bets, though I just found http://www.scan.co.uk too..

What is a "matted" screen, out of curiosity? In layman terms tongue.gif
post #7 of 8
For hardcore gaming, IPS displays would probably not be a good option.
Response time is pretty up there.

Personally, games run just fine on the 30" IPS display I have.

A matted screen is also known as an anti-glare screen.
The sharpness and sometimes even the colors are not as nice compared to glossy screens.

If you find yourself constantly in a brightly lit area, you might want to go with a matte display.
