Using both nVidia and ATI drivers could potentially cause problems. Also having an ATI card under two nVidia cards would look stupid. Also can you please link to these features the ATI cards have the the nVidia cards do not. There is no Bitstreaming technology that I know of that nVidia cards can not do. What you say was true before the GTX 460 but now I think they both are capable.

I don't think you understand what Bitstreaming is exactly. Lossless would be LPCM (Linear pulse-code modulation) . Anything that can be bitstreamed is Lossy. Lets say you have a video file were the audio was encoded with DTS. If you turned on bitstreaming for that file it would actually stream that DTS file to your receiver and it would actually decode it instead of the codec on your computer then going through windows and your sound card driver etc. It is like using ASIO.

i dont think what you propose with another card will work no idea why tho maybe borrow or find an older card you can use with out paying for one to 'test'
id be looking at something like this instead http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1153/1/

That is what I have decided to use. The computer says the receiver is disconnected if a monitor is not connected to it so I am screwed no matter what unless I use optical/coax. I am currently using Dolby Digital Live on my Xonar Essence STX. I wish I could use DTS Connect but it is not supported and I don't currently want to spend the money on one that is able to use it. Most of the videos I play with XBMC are DTS or DD so I can just bitstream them so I have not quality loss. Also most of my music is MP3 with some being FLAC so I will only loose a little bit of quality converting to Dolby Digital Live there. The only real downside is if I play games it will be encoded to DD instead of just LPCM.

I know what bitstreaming is.....What I wanted to know was clarification from Cyrilmak how AMD cards differ from Nvidia cards. Also, you can bitsream lossless since its just sending the info straight to the receiver...
