I know nothing of this 40k universe and want to see if its for me, but dont know which series of games to get. There is the Space Marines one, which got lots of praise and the RTS starcraft 2 like game, the most recent of which is Retribution standalone expansion.
I enjoyed Dawn of War 2 more. It was also much longer than Space Marine. There's also extensions to Dawn of War 2 such as Chaos Rising and Retribution.
Space Marine is a third-person shooter, and pretty fun I might add, and I typically hate TPS's.
Dawn of War 2 is totally different from Dawn of War 1. Dawn of War 2 is a squad-based rts-style game. You control squads of dudes and there's no construction/building element whatsoever. It is also quite fun if you like that style.
I personally think they're both worthy titles, and both give you some good intel into the 40k universe, but I think DoW2 does it better since you deal with ALL the enemy races and Space Marine is Orcs and Chaos Marines.
Really they're both worth picking up, but I'd say get whichever style of gameplay you prefer.
If you want to command armies or squads DOW2, if you want to know what it feels like to be a space marine during an orc invasion then pick space marine. Pick the cheapest up now and wait for sales!
Speaking of cheapest. Space Marine is 15 bucks on Amazon right now until the 29th. Steamworks game so it activates there if that matters
Dawn of War 2 Gold (DoW2 and CHaos Rising) 10.20 on Amazon, also activates on Steam
DoW2 Retribution, 10.20 on Amazon

Thanks, I'm leaning towards retribution though as it doesnt have Windows Live but from the gameplay videos and what I read here I find it odd for RTS game to not have base building or controling large armies, only a squad or two in face and in that respect I don't see how its any different from Space Marine other than a top down view.

in space marine you are actively using: the standard first person shooter controls.
ie. w,s,a,d, etc. it is also alot more up close and personal. not skill or stat based at all
similar to a gears of war style just way more brutal at times hehe

Yeah, it never entered my mind that it could be an RPG type of game, I don't think I'd even want an RPG about killing orcs for the sake of killing orcs. The only third person games that arent RPG I ever liked are GTA and Arkham Asylum.
Space marine is shorter than DOW2, if you're really into warhammer, get DOW2
DOW2 and DOW have all the races of warhammer, and tau in multiplayer
space marine is just the ultramarines, orks, and chaos
the multiplayer in space marine is very fun though, there is a horde mode called exterminatus and another DLC where they give you the chance to play as a dreadnought.

DOW2 and retribution do not have all races, theyre missing dark eldar, tau, necron, sisters of battle and I think thats it. Id recommend Dark Crusade and Soulstorm, they give you all the races except tyranids. But there is a mod for them too. DOW2 has a decent story if youre into the lore
I have Space Marine installed but haven't played it yet. I think its more of a first person shooter, right?
Dawn of War 2 is basically what everyone else said already, but the maps felt very repetitive. And the amount of DLC is just ridiculous.
I felt DOW2 captured the feel of the 40K universe much better than Space Marine. If you play the tabletop game there's few game scenarios where you're controlling one unit. I mean this is war = armies. Even if you get out the biggest baddest units in Retribution to fill up max army size you're still looking at controlling about 6+ individual squads/units.
If I want to play as 1 hero survival mode like in Space Marine I can play last stand, except there's 7 heroes to choose from (if you also buy the Tau DLC, otherwise 6) not just a marine captain.
But they're completely different genres, i'd argue DOW requires more thinking in VS - you don't learn the counters, positions, upgrades etc. and react well you will lose, whereas in Space Marine, multiplayer relies largely on your reflexes and aiming.

DoW 2 is the better 40k experience because it's more true to the tabletop. If you go for DoW2 though there will be some glitches, the online community is fairly small and The Last Stand gets old after you max your level. With all that being said it is glorious and cheesy fun.
