Upgrade - Advise me

Thread Starter
Hey there, I'm looking for some advice on my slowing computer. I'd like to not go over $550.

Here is what its in the rig right now:
Motherboard: Asus M4A78 Plus
CPU: AMD 9600 BE
HDD: Western Digital 60GB 5200 RPM
PSU: Unknown (lol)
GPU: Evga 9600 GT
Case: Antec 300

So... I was thinking of keeping my motherboard, case and my hardrive. Now here is my list of things to buy so far.
Newegg Wishlist

Also, will I need a new install of Windows? Or will I be able to transfer the install from the HDD to SSD without too much problem?

Any advice is great! Thanks smile.gif

Fixed wishlist. Sorry thumb.gif

Can't see your wishlist.. (maybe I'm doing it wrong rolleyes.gif)

A 60GB HDD speaks to me the most off the bat but I believe most everything is due for an upgrade.

I think your mobo is AM3 compatible so you can stay that course.

How much RAM do you have?

CPU RAM HDD/SSD PSU and GPU for under 550?

I'm not sure exactly what your goals are but if you want to quickly become relevant again I would suggest the following:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130625 GPU 550 (this card can hang)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371016 PSU 550 (should be enough)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314 8GB of some good ram

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103995 New Phenom :]

Comes out to a little over 600 with shipping...

Idk how you're alive with 60gb of space lol

If you have an OEM copy of windows you will have to call them directly and tell them you've upgraded your system since it is tied to your motherboard (if you upgrade your board).

*note* I can't see your wishlist... won't make an account as I can't really use newegg.com (Canadian) and it isn't compatible with newegg.ca log in.

If you plan to keep your motherboard there will be a bit of an issue since it lacks support for AM3+. This means you won't be able to stick in an FX series chip in it at all (I believe AM3+ chips lack a DDR2 controller). So even if you got a AM3 chip you'd still be buying yesterdays technology, to top that off sticking an AM3 processor in there won't really net you as much benefit as you might think; you would still get an improvement but you wouldn't get the full potential out of it until you upgraded your motherboard.

I would say look into getting a new motherboard, cpu, ram... and more than likely a new hard drive (assuming yours is IDE, where new motherboards no longer support IDE)

I would say look into getting into something like this:

ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z/GEN3 $190
Intel Core i5-2550K $240
8 GB DDR3 memory (2X4GB) 1866 generally around $70-90

As for hard drives.... whistle.gif

*EDIT*

For an AMD setup you could go with...

ASUS Sabertooth 990FX $185
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T $180
8 GB DDR3 memory (2X4GB) 1866 generally around $70-90

The only problem I have with recommending AMD right now would be that there are going to be newer FX series chips coming out, if there was more solid information available I'd say either would be a good option.
