Should I buy 4x8GB Ram or 8x4GB Ram ?

I am going to 32GB on my new X79 Build. The motherboard is an X79 MSI XpowerII. Which would be easier on the memory controller and allow for easier on overclocking ? 4 DIMMs or 8 DIMMS ?

Unless they've started making better ones recently, the 8GB DIMMS don't overclock as well as 4GB ones. I'd get 8 4GB sticks.
Personally I'd get the samsung 30nm sticks as they're low profile, overclock very well and are also good value for money.

Edit: Having looked at newegg, the 8GB DIMMs look closer to the 4GB ones in the high end than they used to be but even a terrible kit costs a lot more than the samsung memory would cost for 32GB.
There's a thread about it here

you're still at 12GB on your old rig (which is easily capable of having 24GB when filled up with 4GB sticks, which have been extremely affordable for a while now), so why bother with more than 16GB now?

if you're just set in your ways and want 32GB if only because you can, I'd go with 4 x 8GB, because hey, that allows you the option of adding in 4 more sticks for 48 or even 64GB later on wink.gif

but in all seriousness, 4 sticks provides less points of failure. I had two slots on my old X58 board die on me, luckily they were both secondary slots on different channels so I was still able to run 3 x 4GB sticks in triple channel just fine, but it is still an excellent example of how things can go wrong when you add in more potential points of failure.

of which this reminds me that I still need to RMA that board, warranty will be up in a few months tongue.gif

Okay thanks for your input, now to select:

Which of these 4x8GB Module Kits CORSAIR RAM would you recommend ? Both have 10-10-10-27 Timings
CMP32GX3M4X1600C10 (Dominator)
or
CMZ32GX3M4X1600C10 (Vengeance)

What about these 8x4GB Modules
CMZ32GX3M8X1600C9 (Vengeance ) with 9-9-9-24 Timings

I have tried the CMZ32GX3M8X1600C9 (Vengeance ) with 9-9-9-24 kit and it worked great - really stable and handled OC well. Haven't personally tried the other two kits though, so they could be good as well.

Okay so I decided that I want to bling out this water cooled build with RAM coolers (for show) so I bought some EK Waterblocks for Dominator Ram and went with the 4x8GB Dominator. Thanks for all your input. I will tell you if it works okay.
