A few questions for the professionals

Alright my computer has been acting weird lately and I want to get to the bottom of it, and on top of that I need some clarification. Also, my rig is on this website so that will help people answer my questions better hopefully.

1. I had my Phenom II X4 960T overclocked from 3.0 ghz to 3.8 and my system was running perfectly fine, but it would lag HORRENDOUSLY on SWTOR and fluctuate from a steady 70 FPS to a steady 1.5 FPS. I thought it was my video card so I got a new one, same problem. So I finally tweaked around with HWMonitor pro and it told me my CPU was sucking 118 watts, when my MOBO is rated at 95W TDP. So immediately I put the CPU and voltage back to factory settings and now SWTOR doesn't lag AT ALL but HWMonitor pro still says 118 Watts(probably bugged). Could someone please explain to me how this happened? At 3.8 ghz my CPU was always below 50C so heat definitely wasn't the problem, and I have a 750W PSU so that wasn't it either.

2. My MOBO only has HT 1.0 and I believe it is bottlenecking my system, as the CPU is a AM3 and compatible with HT 3.0. The multiplier on my MOBO is up to 5x, and is at 1000 at its highest (200 CPU clock) and I was wondering if I dropped the multiplier on my CPU by half and doubled the clock of my CPU would that increase performance? Or is a 400 clock a bad idea even at half the multiplier?

3. My new GPU is rated a PCI-E X16 2.1, but my MOBO is rated PCI-E X16 1.0. Is this killing my performance?

4. Would I notice a dramatic increase in performance if I got a new motherboard with HT 3.0 and PCI-E X16 2.1?

5. If I have 2 RAM sticks at 1600 and 2 RAM sticks at 2000 will it cause system instability?

All help is appreciated, sorry if I sound like a numbskull for proposing some of these things, I'm still learning

I'd add your current setup to your signature so we can see what components you're running. But it does sound like you have a newer cpu and gpu that would be bottlenecked by and older motherboard.

The simplest and easiest explanation I have for you is this:

I'm willing to bet the CPU is throttling (lowering it's base clock speed) when overclocked because the motherboard is running a 3+1 phase control (power regulator). It's a form of thermal control. This prevents the VRMs from burning out (literally) when they get too hot.

A "new" motherboard is definitely what you need, but you might not have to go too far. I'm running the 960t on a gigabyte ma-ga790x-ud4p (only supports ddr2, but they have a ddr3 version). It runs great, and gigabyte uses high quality phase control, 8+2 on this board, to facilitate all your overclocking needs.

My buddy just bought the ma790xt off ebay for 30 bucks to replace his newer 880 board because he hated it so much.

So is it the voltage?

Thanks for the first link. I'm quite proficient at finding computer parts though, I'll just upgrade my MOBO when I start to have problems because I don't really even need to overclock my CPU

The full load lags from 70 to 1FPS may be due to a presence of over-current throttling protection (that as of now has been unconfirmed on this particularly shoddy low end board with a low end 3 phase power setup, but it may explain a lack of actual VRM failure incidents).  ASRock boards have been known to implement shutdown actually, not throttling, for protection.  This is worse than 3+1 phase by the way, it is 3 phase (AM2, non split phase) with very low quality.  Many are foolish in taking Phenom II x2 and x3 on this board and unlocking cores, bringing TDP well above what is rated.... you need a reliable board with a reliable VRM system and higher power phase count for reliable operation.

i sure you cannot use both ddr2 and ddr3 on this mobo. although, it has the dimm slots for them. hey, but if the system boots you're ok if only you can get rid of those fps dips.
