[Geek] AMD launches the 4.2GHz quad-core FX-4170 processor

AMD has this week launched its first ever desktop processor that ships with a base clock speed above 4GHz. The Bulldozer FX-4170 runs at 4.2GHz in fact, and boosts that to 4.3GHz when Turbo is used.

The FX-4170 is the first of two new 32nm desktop processors AMD has unveiled. The second is the FX-6200, which increases the core count to 6, but lowers the base clock speed to 3.8GHz. However, it can achieve 4.1GHz with Turbo and should outperform the 4170 on anything that takes advantage of those additional two cores.

I wanna see what this thing can do..

Your quote is messed up btw.

I think this is almost a marketing tool more than anything else. Some ignorant people will see "ooh look a 2500K, 3.3Ghz. But wait, there is the AMD FX-4170 with 4.2Ghz! Wow it must be faster!".

And those are actually quite a few people.

Haha, you made an extremly good point, +Rep

Same here. This is like we live in 80's where everything related to turbo was the best. Like a turbo toothbrush and it sold biggrin.gif

I think because 4.2Ghz is already the upper-limit, and they can't have no turbo.

its all well and good selling a processor with a high stock clock speed, but im going to guess that it overclocks like poop on a tray

I wonder what the power consumption on these chips might be. If it's like the FX-8000 series than it's a no go for me.
