Anybody want to enlighten me on why we haven't considered/used sugar for vehicles if we haven't already in the US? I remember somebody telling me that a place like Columbia or Brazil had sugar based energy cars.

The main issue is that lead acid takes longer to change, and with said shorter range you'll need to recharge considerably more frequently rather than just overnight. People already think 4 hours for ~200 miles isn't enough, so what you're suggesting would likely be even worse for the public's perception of EVs.

Also, at least in terms of what Tesla Motors is doing, they're starting from the top of the market and working down - similar to the pricing model of pretty much every other cutting-edge electronic device in existence.

They use ethanol from sugar cane in South America, maybe that's what you heard. We make ethanol from corn, which takes more energy to produce than is extracted from the corn, and not to mention driving up food prices, but in my state its mandatory to have 15% ethanol in the fuel mixtures. Ethanol is not good for many reasons, one being it requires higher compression ratio and it eats certain plastics that can be found in some vehicle's fuel systems such as gas tanks and hoses. Our economy always chooses the most inefficient way to make power, which is funny since I've been learning in economics about how the economy tries to be efficient.

i wasnt able to find a more up to date article on the topic but in the current state they are buying up land in us & europe for farms and are already producing

Hemp would be a good choice. I don't know if it's truly more efficient than oil, but it has a ton of benefits in general. thumb.gif

(and before anyone says anything about the illegality of it, remember that hemp is legal to grow in Canada)

Remember to bring a 110v or 220V extension cord with you to recharge at a home or business.
When there are lots of electric cars on roads, people will start selling electricity from their homes, in their driveways. Businesses will sell electricity to attract customers with electric cars.
I would much prefer to buy electricity from people in my community than buy petroleum from some foreign kingdom.
home solar electric systems are already being used to economically recharge electric cars in California.

In 5-10 years, maybe China will start exporting affordable electric cars which is a good because Americans dont seem very interested in producing them.

What am I reading. The power/weight ratio of lead-acid batteries is horrible, as is the energy density. Meaning, heavy, huger battery packs. It's not complicated to program Li-on batteries so the batteries don't drop below 3-5%. It would take quite a long time to go from 3% to 0%, well over a couple days

15%? IIRC, many car manufactures state that you cannot use over 10% ethanol without them voiding your warranty. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen.
