Random restarts/shutdowns?

Hi,

So a friend of mine's PC is...basically just impossible to get to work right. Initially, it was the following:

AMD Athlon II X4 640
8GB Corsair DDR3-1333 (2x4GB)
GeForce GTX 460 768MB
ASRock M3A770DE
Hitachi 1TB 7200RPM HDD
Antec Earthwatts 750W

It'd do random restarts/bsods, etc., and then finally the PSU went up in smoke. We replaced the PSU with a Corsair TX750W, it worked fine for a few days, and then the motherboard went up in smoke. Then we replaced the motherboard with an ASUS M5A97 (and while we were at it, replaced the GeForce with a Radeon 6870), and everything seemed to be okay at first...

...but now it's randomly restarting/turning off. It's not due to any particular usage scenario -- it'll happen during games, surfing the web, etc. A full windows reinstall was done, still happens.

What's going on here? What are the suspects for this problem? I'm completely at a loss, and would very much appreciate any input.

After all these replacements of components, is you're friend still getting any kinds of BSODs? If so, it would be nice to know which. Possibly with the minibump files if possible.

Anyhow. Have you checked that there isn't a temperature issue? That the computer isn't shutting down/restarting for safety issues with the CPU temp getting to high? Since you're stating that it happens during gaming as well as surfing, it might be an unlikely senario since web surfing aint exactly heavy. But always nice to cove the most.

Appart from that, checked for bad RAM sticks?

Any other spesific parts in the build? Could be that some other parts might have been slightly damaged during the last PSU going up in smoke. But since you've replaced the MoBo and GPU as well, at least for now I'd say we could rule the new parts out of it. And since the problem continues afer a fresh Windows install - the possibility of software failure isn't to likely either, although still possible.

Also, check all cabling to all components, make sure it's all properly connected.

OK, so with the Corsair and that PSU it reboots at random? Same with both motherboards?

Is the CPU/RAM stable?

CPU and mobo temps are very low. In fact, even under full load, the CPU barely over goes over 30C (it's cooled with a Corsair H50).

The RAM idea is something I've not explored.

Try testing the RAM yeah, might be that one or more of the sticks got damaged during the previous PSU failing. Possibly other components such as sound card and such if he's got one.

Little over 30C's under full load? Now if that's so thats pretty nice temps. As far as I know this CPU doesn't run all to hot in general? Could be mistaken there. Anyhow, 30C, does seem somewhat low. Couldn't possibly be misreadings of the temps? Just to be sure I'd to a touch test. Just try and feel the area arround the CPU and possibly the back of the mobo if it's easely accessible. Better safe than sorry.
