I can do 300-350 if he has an OS and it be good for 2-3 years. Monitor can be gotten on craigslist, or the like.

Do you have a microcenter nearby ?

Odp: Under $300 LoL build

It can be done. Buying used parts with a Pentium 4. Won't last you long though. And won't run LoL

Here is his best bet...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883108660&cm_sp=DailyDeal-_-83-108-660-_-Product
just add a video card and I'm sure you can conjure up a free or cheap monitor somehow (craigslist)

Edit: Even better. Again need to add Vcard and monitor

i say just save up an extra $50 or so and buy a laptop with an AMD A-Series APU.
ive seen A6 apu laptops on sale in best buys adds for $350
this solution also includes a display (laptop) of course

this guy is $380
ive seen A4 units in their store for $350 out the door frequently (they have specials every week sunday-saturday)

for the mobo/cpu get the Celeron G530 and a H61 Mobo- probably could get both for 100 and he could get an i5 later on

4 gigs of ram can be had for 20 bucks

for the graphics, look into the 6570 or 6670. Should be around 50

for the OS, look into Server 2008 R2 which can be converted into Windows 7 and is free with a .edu via dreamspark or just visit a site that ends in .se smile.gif

You can find a no name case and Power Supply on newegg for usually 40 shipped

DVD Drive might could be reused from another system.

monitor could be found locally on CL

only thing you would need to get creative about is the HD.

That's actually not a bad Idea. I've seen the AMD apu laptops at radio shack for close to $300. Just have to pay attention to the sales.
