Question about PCIe slots.

Thread Starter
It is rumoured the GTX660 is gonna have PCIe 3.0 x16. My motherboard supports PCIe 1.0. But my current GPU is PCIe 2.0 and it works fine.

Question is, why? Does this affect anything or are they just numbers?

EDIT: Sorry, but I just need to be sure.

The new cards will be backward compatible with everything. I wouldn't worry about it.

It's backward compatible. If your resolution is not higher than 2560x1600 you should be fine. But I would consider upgrading to PCIe2.0 with high end cards.

PCIe1.0 @x16 = PCIe2.0 @x8 = PCIe3.0 @x4.

You will be totally fine. The CPU is going to underperform probably but other than that there's no problem thumb.gif

The rule about PCI-Express is if it fits, it will work. And that even goes to crazy lengths, I cut the back off a PCI-E x1 slot in my sister's PC so we could plug an old GeForce 8800 GTS in for more screens and it works fine! Not that I recommend cutting pieces off your motherboard to force a card to fit into a slot it isn't designed for, but it does work for PCI-Express.

However, depending on the slot length and PCI-Express generation, the bandwidth will vary quite a bit. While some combinations will work they may not be as fast as others.

Does the bandwith really make a difference?

Depends on what you're doing. Surfing the web, checking email, playing Flash games, playing some games, working with Office, watching Netflix - no. Playing modern high-resolution games with high-resolution textures, encoding video, doing 3D modeling - yes.
