Thinking of upgrading from 1055t to FX-8120

With the recent pricedrop, the 8120 has caught my eye. Assuming I can sell my 1055t for about $100, I'd be less than another $100 away from a 8120--which I'd be willing to do. Some places (Microcenter) even have combodeals that could also net me more profit.

Worth it? My 1055t is overclocked to 3.9Ghz (but it's not going any higher). I've seen a lot of 8120s get to 4.5Ghz plus. I know that bulldozer has lower IPC than thuban, but I would think a 4.5Ghz 8120 > 3.9Ghz 1055t no? I've got great cooling (a mineral oil submersion rig being cooled by a phase change chiller), so I think 4.5Ghz+ on a 8120 is well within reason.

My board can take a 8120 with a BIOS update, so don't start me on incompatibility.

I use my machine mostly for productivity and gaming (Battlefield 3).

Advice greatly appreciated. 8120 owners please chime in.

I'd say its a good processor to scratch that "upgrade itch". Hell, I've even bought an FX-4100 to mess around with. I'm sure you could crank that sucker past 4.5GHz with the cooling method you described.

Its a toss up. I was pleased with the performance, but not with the thermals. With summer around the corner, that thing is going to be a space heater (even compared to a 1055). Its also a toss up as far as gaming performance vs. Thuban.

I sold my 8120 after about 3 months, but i never regretted my purchase.

If i may make a suggestion: Keep your CPU, sell your GPU's and spend the money to upgrade your Graphics card. That will be a noticeable upgrade, especially in gaming.

yeah i've been itchy to try that cpu, too or any FX in general actually. I just sold the Phenom II 830 from my wifes computer/htpc and got an FX4100 for the same price I sold 830 and mobo. Actually it'll be less if I get the $10 rebate. I'm looking forward to see how it works.

I think you should upgrade seeing that you could break almost even if you sell the motherboard you get from MC or just get close to it for an upgarde and fun of playing with new toys.

BTW if you sell that 1055T cheap like you said you got a quick sale here smile.gif

FX 8120 is better but you have to apply new patches from Microsoft and if u want more performance Linux! it makes fully usage of its architecture

Good point, but everything I've seen says that the bulldozers have lower wattage output than the thubans. I'm not really interested in selling my graphics cards, however.

Thanks for the reply. I'm definitely going to upgrade to Windows 8 when it comes out, which is supposed to be more BD-friendly anyway. So I've got that in mind.

I would recomend a GPU upgrade as well. Changing CPU's will net you literally no performance gain in BF3 but upgrading to something like a 2gb 6950 or 2gb 560 ti will give you a good improvement in the game at high resolutions.
