Help putting my own website up on the web.

Thread Starter
Hi guys, I am developing a personal website/portfolio and once done am looking to put it on the web. I've done some research and it seems that using an online web hosting service is the best thing to do for quick and easy. This website has recommended some web host companies this year. Would you say the same? I just wanted to ask you guys as I always do and get good results! smile.gif Thanks!

Purchase your domain name on:
www.godaddy.com
And point the DNS servers to your host's.

Get some hosting space anywhere really, I've had an awesome experience with Inmotion Hosting, others recommend HostGator, there are a LOT smile.gif But remember, you get what you pay for! Cheap hosting companies won't provide you with the same services (such as large amounts of MySQL databases, email addresses, etc.) and might have some unplanned downtime.
I wouldn't recommend hosting on godaddy, I've heard some negative stuff about their services.
But really, Inmotion is where I put my vote!

Hardest part will be the developing, feel free to PM me with any questions you have on web things!

Wasn't GoDaddy a SOPA supporter? Wouldn't go with them.

Here's a couple of Lifehacker articles on Web and domain hosting worth a read

GoDaddy is crap. People just recommend it because they haven't tried anything else.
  • Their site is has an awful interface, trying to make you buy stuff you don't need.
  • Their DNS name servers suck and are overcrowded
  • They supported Internet censorship, but backed off when it started affecting their business
  • Their former CEO killed Elephants for sport.

There are so many better solutions out there like NameCheap, Hover, Gandi.

No one said to use GoDaddy as a host. They have cheap prices on domain names. I use Network Solutions myself. It has a sitebuilder application you can use if you do not know how to build a site. It also has one click installations of open source software like Wordpress.

I don't have any recommendations for a hosting service, but I would also recommend using GoDaddy for a domain name.

I would also recommend dabbling in a Virtual Machine with Linux on your own computer running Apache so you can test out your website yourself and make really fast changes without affecting your main site. The practice is good too in case you ever decide to start managing your own site as well.

Have used a smorgasbord of domain and hosting services in the past and can honestly say that Namecheap's stuff, service and support is the best.
