[MacRumors] iPad 3 to Pave Way for 1080p iTunes Content and a New Apple TV?

Apple is expected to reveal the new iPad at a media event in the first week of March. The new iPad is widely believed to carry a ultra-high resolution 2048x1536 display that exceeds the resolution of 1080p content. Apple, however, presently only offers a maximum of 720p HD content on their iTunes Store. 720p also happens to be the maximum resolution that the current generation Apple TV supports.

We've already seen evidence that Apple has been working on a next generation Apple TV. Back in October, references to an unreleased "AppleTV3,1" model were found in the latest versions of iOS 5. Meanwhile, Apple has reportedly asked movie studios to start submitting 1080p content to the iTunes Store late last year.

Apple TV 3 is something I'll definitely be buying soon... At $99 it'll be a bargain.

Hmm? You'd mock a $99 quad-core set top box that lets you Stream everything you own to your HDTV?
Quad core is irrelevant. I have been streaming everything I own to my HDTV for years with just about any device. PS3. HTPC.
If you want to talk cheap, the WDTV boxes are $100 and they can play way more formats than an AppleTV can.

Edit: Where do you read quad core anyways?

I've never heard of the WDTV, thanks for that. thumb.gif And as far as the quad core, I think he's referring to another article, not this one.

The Apple TV 3 is smaller and only has a 6 watt power supply. What format can't you play on Apple TV that's commonly used?

It's not in the article. It should be in the iPad 3 though, so it should be in the Apple TV too.

There's no article I know of which hints at it having a quad-core, however it is likely.

Smaller is a stretch. It's an inch less in length and 0.3" in height.
For formats- .mkv and .avi to start. I don't know about the power supply for the WDTV but it can't be all that much more than the AppleTV. It hardly does anything.

Some examples of movies you can't add or play include WMV, AVI, DivX, RealMedia (rm), and Flash format files. Some third-party utilities may be able to convert these types of movies to a format compatible with iTunes and Apple TV.
