The A4 can't play more than 720p though -- a dual core or quad-core would fix that though.
My computer and TV aren't near each other, and I'd say that's true of many.

I'd rather get an HTPC though, or one of those USB sticks that have full Android OS in it. Does the same job.

The former is more expensive though isn't it? This is small, cheap, and powerful. True, it doesn't support as many codecs as others, but I'm sure there's plenty of people who use a codec it supports.

That's assuming you don't install ATV Flash. Can you say "Jailbroken ATV"? biggrin.gif

I would say that it is likely pretty common for people to have a computer in their living room, all you need is a long HDMI cable and your set.

This apple POS doesn't even support MKV's, in other words it can't play the majority of content on the internet. A PS3 does pretty much the exact same thing as this only with far more functionality.

I always thought apple tv was neat...until my friend bought one (last years model i guess) and it only supports 720p. I laughed and told him that theres better units out there for the same price all he said was "well those arent mac, this works with my macbook"....i just looked at him and walked away....im glad i never bought one. The new ones seem interesting but with the limited format support, i dont like. I would much rather the WD...actually...thats a good idea...

Not everyone wants a long HDMI cable running through the house anytime they want to watch a movie. That aside, as I said above, for $30 you can "jail break" your Apple TV 2 which adds a whole lot of extra functionality.

Yes, but most everyone who has a HDTV that's interested in streaming media has a game console of some sort. And that game console is hooked up to the network - instant streaming with no hassle. This isn't even considering all of the old computers that most have, they can dust that off and throw it next to the TV and pay nothing. I have an old e-machine that's going to function as a media streamer/minecraft server if I can ever get off my lazy butt and get it set-up. Until then, I'll just use my media streaming from WMP12 to the xbox and call it a day.

I watched a few friends fight with the AppleTV that made up my mind (and my generally anti-apple stance). There are products that work better out of the box that don't need to be jailbroken to function correctly, for the same price tongue.gif.

Also long HDMI cables are cheap if you know where to look (cough monoprice cough).

I for one am not looking forward to the actual "apple HDTV". Meh.

Don't any modern TV's have this functionality built in? How in the world did Apple ever sell any Apple TV's if they don't even support 1080P?

My Toshiba has it built in and it's complete junk. Heck, pictures lag even with a wired connection.

I just assumed it wouldn't suck because of how cheap and easy is it to play 1080p stuff now a days. Leave it up to hardware manufacturers to butcher the software.

But seriously though, how did Apple ever manage to sell any Apple TV"s without 1080p playback???

The codecs are only a problem if you happen to have ripped all your movies in that format, that aside... I don't see what else these box sets do that the Apple TV doesn't do? And I'd bet after being jail broken you can do a lot more than any of those other box sets can.

The first Apple TV couldn't even do 720p without lag. Oh and they only sell 720p from the store.
