Best media player for Linux - Page 2

VLC is garbage. I've never seen a product with so many open bugs. Shame on them for even thinking that they could release that code to everyone.

Banshee should work fine, most likely you have a bad version or a bad packaging of said version. rolleyes.gif If you turn the logging up, the error message when it crashes might clue you in on how to fix it. It works fine here... perhaps you should check the bug tracker for the banshee package in your distro, and try an upgrade or most likely a downgrade. If you're using ubuntu, I hope you like open bugs. You should use a more stable distro with an actual testing and QA process such as debian or gentoo.

Seriously?
I've found it to be one of the least buggy media players around.

What sort of issues have you had? Maybe I've just been lucky :-)

Only 2 I've used for movies is MPlayer and VLC, although with VLC 2 it seems to have issues playing music from the couple of times I've tried just to play with it after release.

Little update, Exaile turned out to be a little buggy when it came to anything regarding play counts so I'm using Clementine.. and loving it biggrin.gif

off the top of my head: mplayer, dragon player, amorak.

I don't buy the "platform specific" argument either. Many of the codecs used are from well recognised sources and are just pure maths anyway (ie no need to be platform specific) and the interface are wrappers around the core app and use standard platform specific user space toolkits (eg Win32 / Qt).

If you start a project with multiple platforms being the goal, then there's no reason for that project to be any less stable than platform specific projects.

I always like Amarok and Banshee when I was running Mandriva.

Amarok was slightly heavier then Banshee but offered a better UI and WAY better options thumb.gif

I use Amarok because it's what I got used to back in my Mandrake days.

Its really unstable compared to many other host specific players. I almost never see windows Media Player crash, but VLC will often crash playing the same media on windows, and the list goes on.

Most of the problems I see with VLC crashs, seem to occur not from the decoding but the drawing code. That is platform specific stuff.
