Need advice in overclocking

Thread Starter
Hello all, I'd like some advice in overclocking, I'd like to think I know the basic, but one thing I'm having major problems with is everytime I increase the freq of my cpu, my ram starts to play up and I've got to increase the ram timings. etc

to get 3.9ghz stable my ram timings need to be 10-11-10-28-35, the freq speed of the memory is 1772mhz, now decreasing the memory freq does no difference at all, doesn't give me head room to overclock further nor does it let me tighen the timings, increasing the memory voltage over 1.55 makes my system unstable. why does the memory need to be config just for me to overclock the cpu? I dont get it.

You have a locked multiplier CPU.Try using a lower RAM divider.

when you say lower the ram divider you mean the multiplier or the dram frequency option? the one that has 1333 , 1600 and so on? If you mean the memory freq, lowering the memory freq does no difference at all, I can knock the memory freq to 14xx or something and it's still unstable. the only thing that allows me to overclock higher is increasing the timings.

another thing I'm pretty sure I've read reviews that these memory are able to run at 1840mhz with 9-10-9-27, mine at 1800mhz 11-11-11-29.

It's not the RAM,it is the on-die memory controller.AMD K10 CPU's don't like speeds over 1600MHz without a lot of voltage. And yes I was refering to the RAM multiplier. Here's an example of extreme overclock on locked CPU.

You are overclocking via ref clock.  It is easier to work on bringing the ref clock up to a point where RAM can run stable at rated settings (i.e. 300Mhz bus clock x 5.33 for 1600Mhz operaton) and then taking advantage of the CPU clock speed/multiplier headroom above that until it is then unstable.

Binning can be different and that doesn't mean much nowadays in a period when IC grab-bagging is common.

I've found that I can overclock further with higher memory freq, If I lower the ram multiplier below 1772mhz which is around 14xxmhz I think, it doesn't even post, I've also noticed something else is my system likes higher HT LINK, keeping it around 2100mhz it fails prime95 within seconds, increasing it to around 24xx mhz, prime95 runs for over 12hours +.

I'm pretty sure I've tryed 300bus and memory at 1600mhz, Couldn't get it to post/boot up at all. But I will try this again later, what I notice at the moment, the further I overclock the cpu the more i've got to loosen the timings, etc increasing cpu multiplier from 14.5 to 15, it will fail prime95 until i loosen the timings to around 11-12-11-30, even tho by increasing the cpu multiplier i'm only overclocking the cpu, so dont know what's going on. maybe i'm a complete nub at this.

I have tryed 280Bus, which makes memory at 1500, and again same issue really tbh, timings needed to be 10-11-10-27 for it to even be able to post and boot, I think maybe it's time to buy some new memory.

the best overclock I can do is x16 multi, 240bus which makes it 3.85ghz, 2.4ghz northbridge ( shame this couldn't be higher ) memory at 1600mhz with 9-9-9-24, prime95 has ran for over 14hours, maybe now I'll try either to increase the bus untill i start to fail prime95 or reduce memory speed down a slot and increase bus. or should I just leave it like this and try and tighen the timings?

If you try increasing the HTT to 300, you'll probably need to increase both the North and South bridge voltages in order to maintain stability.

My system also prefers to have the HTlink as close to the NB freq as possible.
