Sorry about leaving you hanging, I was busy riding home from college .
No, it won't wipe out your "my documents" folder. If you go to documents and settings, your username will still be there, and in it, all of your data. Then you could back it up to another drive and reformat your original hdd. Oh, and btw, if you still have interest in Ubuntu (which I highly suggest) drop me a PM. I can walk you through it. Paired up with the Automatix script, it's easy to get started with Ubuntu.

If you install over an already existing partition all your Docs should remain. However i would perhaps install Linux on another HDD or another partition and back-up your Docs just in case.
