Do laptop coolers work?

I've been told that fan coolers are only good for lifting the laptop to allow more air to circulate around the laptop, and the fans can't push anymore air than the laptop can take in?

I may be wrong, but I think they might mess with the laptop's air pressure and have a negative effect.

They work if they don't block any existing fans if there are any.
