Stupid question but google won't help me!

I guess what I'm about to ask sounds pretty stupid and chances are it is...

So, I was looking through the intel atom motherboard and the majority of them support DDR2-800mhz and DDR2-667mhz. I know memory can downclock...but can they upclock?

Thing is I got an 2x1gb DDR2-4200 (533mhz) and I don't wanna buy the DDR2-667mhz...or the 800mhz. I assume that it won't work but who know? I haven't seen anything with google yet. And who know what 'unsupported' memory is. I'm looking at the INTEL D410PTL.

Thanks, any response will be good.

Upclocking is called Overclock, and is what this forum is all about smile.gif

In General, RAM can overclock. However, I've never seen anyone OC an Atom build. It very much depends on what the BIOS allows you.

You should just use the 533MHz RAM as it will most likely just run at 533MHz whether it says it was supported or not.

RAM is an unstable overclock at the best of times. You would be lucky to get the RAM to run even 100MHz over the rated speed.

You should be fine!!

I feel dumb for not thinking. -_-

Generally, I don't tend to overclock anything given I'm a bit uneasy messing around with voltage (totally confused about my CPU setting on bios as result) so anything OC is beyond my ability to deal with. And the BIOS is probably very simple given it's an intel atom motherboard...

But ya, no OC for ram since I never felt it'll really do me much good as you guys also inform me. But does anyone else also feel that an 533mhz RAM would work on an 667mhz and 800mhz ram when the mobo doesn't actually support that speed? Anyone got links or practical experiences with them?

Thank you for your timely reply and answer, Ronin426850 and Rubers.

Sam
