VCore all over the place with new Motherboard.

Hi guys,

I recently purchased the Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 and I believe it has the F5 bios. I have been overclocking and stable at 4ghz with 1.45v, at least that's what I am at under my bios. (Only CPU is overclocked currently, everything else at stock.)

When I am idle, CPU-Z will show the vcore bounce up and down from 1.488v to 1.504v on a 3-5 second interval. Like previously stated, I have the CPU voltage set to 1.45 under the bios. Now when I Prime, the voltage changes between 1.536 to 1.552v. I feel like I have turned off all of the power management stuff like Cool n Quiet and so forth.

This is my first gigabyte board so I am not to familiar with all the options and I may be missing something here (I'm sure I am). Is there anything you can suggest that might be causing this problem? Is this normal? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

EDIT: My comp specs have not updated below. I have the motherboard mentioned above and now running a Corsair HX850W, not the TX650W.

Well I think I have solved my idle fluctuation by messing with the LLC, (options Regular-Extreme, give the same results), under CPU-Z it shows my Vcore setting (well very close to it, not exactly) but is not fluctuating.

EDIT: After further monitoring, the voltage will fluctuate a little bit 1.488 (Bios at 1.47) to 1.502v but far less than the 3-5 second interval as it was doing with LLC set to Auto.

Now, when I prime, the voltage still jumps up AND fluctuates anywhere between 1.536 to 1.552V under CPU-Z, while the CPU voltage under the bios is set at 1.47V.

Isn't 1.55V damaging? My temps are fine.

I have this same board, just noticed that mine is jumping between 1.458 and 1.472. You said LLC corrects the fluctuation.

It helped lower the fluctuation rate at idle (still will jump up from 1.488 to 1.502 occasionally) but once I put it under load with Prime95 it jumps up to the voltage I described above and fluctuates between those every couple of seconds)

So all in all, I haven't figured out how to get a stable Vcore with this board. Still need help if anyone has some options to try.

It'll never get completely stable. Your voltage will always vary slightly, it just happens. Nothing you can really do about it, except mess with LLC levels.

And no, 1.55v vcore and 1.50v CPU-NB won't harm your chip any in the slightest, so long as temps stay under 60*C or less (55*C or less preferred).

So is this jump in voltage considered okay once I put it under load with Prime? Am I pretty much at my CPU OC cap with this voltage jumping and fluctuating, even though I have only set it at 1.47 in the bios? Do more expensive boards help with this?

You're pretty safe right now. You could go SLIGHTLY higher. Like I stated, up to 1.55v is perfectly safe on vcore. I ran 1.60v daily on my Athlon II x4 (unlocked L3 cache). I wouldn't recommend it as its not "technically" safe.

And yes, better boards can handle vdroop better. There's nothing specifically "wrong" with your current board though.

Thank you for your help. I guess I will get used to getting what I pay for. I just didnt know if there was more options besides LLC to help this vdroop (that was the term I was looking for the entire time). Also, is there a way to tell how a board will perform Vdroop wise besides checking out peoples reviews and oc experiences?

Now a totally off topic question and hope you wont take offense and can give me some pointers. I am starting to do a lot of upgrading. Where do you recommend to sell items besides Ebay and Craigslist ect. Is it pretty difficult to get rep to sell items in this forum? Any pointers would be appreciated. I am currently going to school at the University of Idaho in Moscow (pretty small town) and it does not have the greatest market for computer parts. Thanks for your help.

Best way to find out about vdroop is to just simply ask around with other overclockers (like here on OCN), and check out reviews and other people's build logs and such. It really won't be listed as a specification on the details page or anything.

Rep...ehh, it all depends. The more content you put on the site, the more rep you'll eventually get. The easiest way to get more rep....is don't try to get rep. Just hang out here on OCN, help people that you can help with, post some news (make sure to follow the right format), post online deals..... It'll come in time. Some members have gotten the required 35 rep in less than a month (recently even). And no, a second account just to boost your rep count can't be done. We will catch it. tongue.gif

We will catch it. tongue.gif

Awesome, I will keep all that in mind. One last question and I'll be done. Are there any other online sites you recommend trying to sell at? Like I said, trying to sell local where I am located right now is very hit and miss. Also, how is this site with selling/buying? Is there a lot of activity?
