TV Tuner

Thread Starter
I've been looking into getting a TV tuner card for a while now, but there is a slight problem I have. I'll be adding this card to my main desktop PC because I intend on using this in my dorm room, and it's either a monitor or TV and I chose monitor so there's no room for both. But I still want to watch TV and as of right now I have no way of doing this. I was thinking of the Ceton card as I hear good things about it but it requires a CableCard, something I can't get from my college. Is there an easy way to get TV on my PC without sacrificing quality? Can anyone recommend a good tuner card that would work in my situation? Budget is $300ish but cheaper is better obviously. Thanks.

I use the TV Wonder 600 PCIe. It's only about 20 bucks and records HD channel's perfectly.

I'm not entirely sure actually. Is there a way to tell for sure? It works with no set top box as most kids will just plug in the coax into the back of their TV's, so would that tell me anything about the signal? I've asked the IT department with no luck. Thanks.

Sounds like standard def (basic cable) which means your tuner would need to be NTSC. Have fun!
NTSC- standard def (coax into tv channels like 2-100 or whatever)
ATSC- Over the air antenna (mix of HD and standard def)
ClearQam- HD (The HD channels you pick up when plugging coax into TV, usually very few if any)

Hmm how far away is the tv point/antenna from your desktop? Also what available expansion slots are free on your motherboard i.e PCI or PCIe?

If it is just plugged into tv's, then any NTSC tuner will work.
USB tuners are hit and miss, some work great, others not so well. Just look for a PCI or PCI-e card.

Any of these will work

As far as I understand it, it doesn't REQUIRE the cable card, but has the capability. From the stuff I've read it should be able to work just fine with unencrypted cable channels. Your best bet, email ceton support and ask the question. Also, they just dropped the price on infinitv4 to $200....smile.gif

The cable card is required for any encrypted channels. No point in getting the Ceton if your not getting a cable card.
