Battlefield 3 - GPU and CPU "spiking" - Page 3

Nope, Speedstep is what changes clocks to idle clocks when you're not gaming.

Have you considered that your CPU/GPU are overheating, lowering clocks to survive, thus "being loaded more" because the lower clock speeds can't handle the game as well?

I don't believe it is an overheating issue as I am reaching the desired/regular framerates instantly after the spike. I'm guessing if it were heat related I would be experiencing a consistent drop after the spike occurred.

Alright then I'm at a loss as to how to disabe hyperthreading. This laptop's BIOS is something I've never seen before so I really have no idea as to what to do now. I've heard of flashing the BIOS, I'm just not certain is that is the best course of action for this problem.

Here is a picture from MSI Afterburner while the computer is idle(just the browser open) over the course of about ten minutes or so.

This is a picture while in game with any of the spiking involved - over the course of about 10 minutes or so.

*note - my ingame settings are set to low with vsync off.

Yes, the second picture is during Battlefield3 game play where I am experiencing the performance spikes with reduced frame rates.

Using "render.perfoverlayvisisble 1" I am seeing a sudden vertical spike in GPU and CPU which cascades up over time and then drops off as sudden as it occurred. It lasts for two-three seconds on average and cuts my frame rates.

I only read the OP a few other posts so forgive me if they have already asked. In your OP you stated that you were using the most up to date drivers.. does this mean you are using the OFFICIAL drivers? or the BETA drivers? List your current version please. I would suggest using the beta drivers as the official drivers suck for BF3.

EDIT: Also, disabling hyperthreading may indeed help. It will lower the temperatures and only use logical cores for BF3. I have heard hyperthreading giving issues before with games.

No it does not happen at all in other games as far as I know. The only other computer game I play at the moment is SWToR.

I'm using the official drivers. I'll try to roll back and use some beta drivers and see if that helps the situation at all.

Current GPU driver is:

Version: 8.17.12.9573 (295.73)
Date: 2/9/12
Driver Name: nvd3dumx.dll,nvwgf2umx.dll,nvwgf2umx.dll,nvd3dum,nvwgf2um,nvwgf2um

Use this driver. I assume you are running a 64 bit version of Windows 7:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-295.73-whql-driver.html

That is the latest beta driver.

I have the same problem with the new drivers (GTS 450 SLI), my usage spikes up and down and I get artifacts in games mad.gif Everything is fine with 285.62 though. I'm guessing that reverting the drivers will solve this for you?
