new SSD, but im a noob

Thread Starter
so, i just bought the OCZ Agility 3 Sata III 60GB SSD from newegg, only $60 after MIR biggrin.gif
im deciding what to put on it.
ive never ran a dual-drive machine before, so i have many questions.

how much of a performance gain and disk-space sacrifice will i see from putting windows on my ssd?
How do i move the useless parts of windows to my hdd?
how will i install things like steam and origin to my hdd but 1 or 2 of their games to my ssd?
other than my media, what personal data should i back up, if any?
what should i do to put my hdd back in the system (since it will have full windows, and i DNT wanna lose that data.

please walk me through (im a noob at this) ways to get the most out of the limited space on my ssd

as you can see, installing all of my games on my ssd will not be an option, even without windows installed

I can recommend using Steam Mover, and following Seans Install Guide to the very last period, this will get you as much space as possible. A quick google search will show you how to install Origin games elsewhere, and make sure to quadruple check that guide by Sean, it's really great! I hope you enjoy your SSD smile.gif

Here, since you probably don't want to install each and every one to your SSD then move them one by one, read this
post #5 of 21
Here is how I moved Steam to 1 of my new drives last week:
Exit the Steam client application.
Browse to the Steam installation folder for the Steam installation you would like to move (C:\Program Files\Steam by default).
Delete all of the files and folders except the SteamApps folder and Steam.exe
Cut and paste the whole Steam folder to the new location, for example: D:\Games\Steam\
Launch Steam and log into your account.

Steam will briefly update and then you will be logged into your account. For installed games, verify your game cache files and you will be ready to play. All future game content will be downloaded to the new folder (D:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\ in this example)

Simple and easy and I had no issues at all. And another recommendation for Sean's Install Guide too. Following that made it very easy to get my new SSD set up and running. And heres a link on how to move just certain Steam games to the SSD:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/262456-32-guide-transfer-steam-games

As for Origin I only have BF3 installed on my HDD as far as games go. Origin itself is installed on my HDD but in settings for Origin you can set the location of the game install to the SSD. Once whatever games you want installed to the SSD are finished installing go into Origin and change the install location to your HDD to keep other installs from going to the SSD.

So far on my 64GB Crucial M4 SSD I have Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2010, Battlefield 3, and Malwarebytes on there and still have 10.6GB of space left. Next to a new GPU installing an SSD was 1 of the most noticeable upgrades I've ever done.

When you do a clean build, make sure that you move all of your download and library directories to your secondary hard drive.

Install it to your HDD with your mass collection of games, and then use this utility to move the select few games to your SSD.

I'm pretty sure he means direct your browsers download folder to your hard drive not ssd, and your documents, photos, music, videos, etc libraries in Windows 7.

It is detailed in Sean's SSD guide linked earlier. Your going to want to direct certain things to the storage drive that would usually be on the SSD by default.
