Yes through a digital input plug in the back of a head. Of which is then synthesised with an internal calibration program. Duh..everybody can do this..don't tell me you can't? I'm hearing about a 5.67% difference(keep it at 3 S.F plz) between optical toslink and coaxil with my setup

That's it. Enough said. You'd have to try one for yourself and run a battery of tests like I did.

It's rooted in your unconscious bias towards the fancier and more expensive cable. Do a blind test. Have a friend switch out USB cables while you're out of the room, and see if you can see which is which. Then repeat multiple times and then do the same with your friend. Battery of tests you say? Do you mean actually scientific tests checking the uniformity of the digital signal or "tests" you did with your ear? Unless of course, despite the actual science of acoustics, psychoacoustics, and human bias, physics be damned, you can hear a difference.

On topic though, here is a technical review: http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/05/fiio-e7-usb-dac-amp.html

You don't really have to check all of the graphs, since most concern things that most people wouldn't hear or know they were hearing. However, he seems to like, it since for $99 you get a fair amount.

Yeah I read that. Haven't ordered yet, but I probably will soon. Reviews say the iBasso D-Zero is higher quality, but it costs $110, before iBasso's crazy shipping. It's in my price range, but It'd be much easier to get the E7 from amazon, and have it on my doorstep the next morning for less than waiting a week for the iBasso. That and, I doubt my ears are tuned well enough to tell a difference yet. Now I'm trying to track down a replacement cable to mod for my cans.

Sort of an offtopic question about the E7:

Anyone know how well this pairs with the Shure SE535s? Although I find them fine, I'm considering getting a portable amp since I plan to get a pair of cans (Deciding between AT-M50's and Senn HD598's)

And is there any other alternatives? I'm mainly somewhat worried whether the amp would make the 535s hiss as they're pretty sensitive in that regard.

Do you just need an amp or also a DAC? There are better only amps out there but don't have the options, easy availbility, price, build quality, features of the E7. Performance wise of course there is.

When I was looking at the headphone buyers guide on head-fi, the M50s were in the category that suggested they wouldn't benefit much from an amp. So you may not even need one if you're considering them.
