I take it you're not into gaming much?

Oh I game allright. Although it's not very graphically intensive I must admit. Unreal 3, Team Fortress 2 from FPS, EVE Online from MMO's, Civilization 4 from simulation, etc. I'm just not usually running on flat out "Ultra" settings but tend to find the sweet spot for myself with "Custom" settings in games. With your 3 Gb of vRAM the vRAM is not issue ofc. I have 1 Gb and at 10 megapixel I use it is an issue. And ofc TBH the card(s) I have atm are a bit on the weak side for that as well. Will need to upgrade soonish - just waiting for the nVidia to put its cards on the table to see hows the bang-for-buck in their upcoming release.

As far as quality vs performance vs resolution goes its subjective to some degree (other than benchmarks ofc, which tend to be pretty objective). For me having high resolution with wide viewing angle is worth more than maxed out HDR and AA settings as long as what I see is "good enough". Although this is drifting away from 4k screens and more into the area of multi-display-setups if one does not have top of the line gfx card.

I was assuming you were talking about average, not max. In my experience the main factor if game is playable is even minimum fps. As long as the minimum is high enough its more or less ok.

Now as far as the performance to drive 4k screens goes on the consumer level I guess that my level of "acceptable performance" is lower than your "acceptable performance". However, I would speculate, that if your current "average consumer" can live with PS3 and XBox level gfx the AMD 5770 level gfx at 4k resolution would blow their socks off wink.gif Whats just needed for that are the displays at cheap enough price point as the "average" GFX performance seems to be getting there with this or at latest next gen GFX options.

Fair enough. There is some personal preference involved.

However you shouldn't mention consoles in contrast to pc games. A lot of pc gamers are into pc games simply because they want the better graphics. wink.gif

I'm not arguing that a 4k resolution gaming experience is not possible. I'm also not arguing that the average pc gamer will not be able to experience it at some point. I'm only arguing against a single card GPU solution being able to do it within the next year (without playing at console level graphics settings). The average consumer doesn't use more than one GPU.

How many triple monitor setups do you see on these forums with only 1 GPU? My system isn't done yet. It's going to be a triple monitor setup. But it's not cheap... I'm going to need at least one more GPU and my other 2 monitors. I haven't priced them lately, but I figure ~$1200 is a rough guess for all 3. Bringing the total of my system to ~$4200.

I think that price tag puts it out of reach of the "average" consumer and it's still a lot less pixels than a 4k resolution monitor would use.

I still am not going to be able to play "every" game at max settings @120Hz, probably not even every game at 60Hz. In fact, I will get worse performance with 3 monitors and 2 GPUs than I do now with 1 monitor and 1 GPU. But I seek more resolution. smile.gif
