HD 6970 Crossfire VS HD 7970 - Page 2

I'm pretty impressed that a pair of $220 6950s can beat a $600 7970. I don't think it's just me... but 7970s can't stretch their legs because of the machiavellian OCP.

Crossfire HD 6970 is faster than HD 7970 alone. But the downside is:

- Micro-shuttering

- Pain in the butt with drivers + CAP releases

- New games = long wait (~1 month) to fix CFX issues.

- It utilize more power

- More heat

- More noises

As for me, I am waiting for Nvidia to announce their cards soon.

So yes a 6970 CF will be faster then a 7970.

... dat math ....

Well I dunno, considering my 24/7 stable OC is a 50% OC on the core and 40% OC on the memory over a standard 7950, that is some pretty good leg stretching in my opinion considering it is all on air and quiet and the fact there is still even more in the card, if I wanted to push 1.25v and 1.7v on the memory all day long...which I do not.

With all the negatives Performance Tops them all. Also HD 7970 are not what you would get if you want stable drivers. HD 6970 have been out for 1 year now and Drivers have had time to mature.

May I ask what driver instability you're speaking of? I ask because I have not had any driver stability issues with my 7970.

I came from 2 6990s to two 7970s and a third on the way. I would say that just the 2 7970s is not faster then the quad by no means but for some reason it feels smother. I do know though that 3 7970s will be faster. then the 6990s and less heat.
It is true that the OCP on 7970's is a pain to get around. My overclock doesn't even work in some games and I have to set it down to 1125 to even get the cards to work. Hopefully some sort of bios flash is done and this can be gotten around in the future.

The downside to 6970 crossfire in my opinion isn't even so much the microstutter but the fact that 6 series cards choke on anti-aliasing and tesselation which really makes it a hard sell in newer games.

All I can do is hope they improve now I have many games on steam , 290 to be exact and yeah alot do play fine like bf3 I have on origin mw3 and other fairly new games , but I say 40-50 games I have tried out of the 150 or w/e I have installed have a prob in crossfire and or not in crossfire. look Alan Wake still does not play in crossfire I mean *** takes amd so long to just get a good working whql driver out on day 1.
