LOL, it works just fine... I did it, you have to switch where your looking, press the down key and it will bring the results up with a setting instead of an app....

The thing is though, that takes a lot more time and clicks/key-presses than before to execute. These differences are subtle and the issue is not whether you can do something in Windows 8, it's how efficiently you can do it.

I was thinking about trying this out, however I've never run multiple OS's on a single machine, and my mechanical keyboard doesn't have a Windows key.

I see. But if multiple groups (apps, settings, files) return results (and they WILL):
winkey ->type search term -> tab ->down key ->enter->move with arrow keys -> enter
VS
winkey->type search term->move with arrow keys->enter

i know, but the layout is better in my opinion. its just something new instead of the same old thing. its a nice change. besides, does the one second more count that much? windows 8 makes things simpler.

also, everyone saying that they want an X button on a metro app: there is a reason why it doesn't have one. its the look of the UI. i would rather have something look really nice and clean, and profesional, then have an X button just sittin out there. and its still very easy to close a metro app. grab from the top, and drag to the bottom. simple.

Interesting.

I installed ObjectDock Free on my install (Win8 32bit on Oracle VM VirtualBox) and set it up to hide the taskbar.

The corner shortcuts still work, and pressing the Start Menu button on the ObjectDock opens the Metro interface.

Mouse left in bottom-left corner to show corner shortcut.
450

All cleaned up with unneeded shortcuts removed.
450

If there was an actual start menu in addition to Metro, I'd consider using this in a future build.

Disregarding the Metro UI, is there anywhere I could read about the new features and actual improvements about windows 8, which make it better than windows 7? Because if I can use object dock like above I would buy it just for the improvements in the actual OS, if they're worth it.

Well I installed this onto my sig rig and I have to say, I'm actually beginning to like this OS. Installation was quick at around 15 minutes from USB, and the first boot into the desktop seemed pretty snappy too.

I have been using Windows 8 since the very early builds, and to be honest, after using the Developer Preview build on a day to day basis I wasn't entirely impressed with it. From a usability standpoint, getting to most used applications and settings took longer than Windows 7, and the Metro Start Screen didn't work all that well with traditional input methods.

For me, comparing the Developer Preview to the Consumer Preview is like night and day. The OS is now blazingly fast, the Start Screen can now be customised and organised to your liking, and also works much better with keyboard and mouse. If you are a power user like me then you will be happy to know that Microsoft have also included a quick access menu in place of the Start button, simply by right clicking in the bottom left corner you can get access to most commonly used functions within the OS.

Although the Metro Start Screen is much criticized, it really isn't THAT bad once you get into the flow of using it. In fact, I would go as far to say that it is now just as quick to find and launch applications when compared to Windows 7. I personally think that for most, it is just getting used to that bit of change, and accepting that things never stay the same and move on.

Right now, I'm managing a few work VM's in HyperV, extracting some large files, checking email, listening to music, browsing the web and talking to family on Skype. Everything is running as smooth as silk!

Surely I can't be the only power user that actually enjoys using this OS?

Bring on the Release Candidate I say! smile.gif
