Hell yeah, Quake railguns FTW!!! However, I think it might be more likely that we become able to rocket jump before carrying a portable railgun. smile.gif

You can rocket jump currently, unfortunately we're made of rather squishy stuff, and to use enough explosive for a decent lift, there wouldn't be much left of your legs, or the rest of you.

Has the F word in it, not allowed. Anything that has abbreviate with f in it. Also, replacing f with hell is considered bad too.

When will we have this built into phones next to the pico projector? thumb.gif

I won't make a debate of it. I am quite surprised by your reaction. Let's just say this tech sounds cool.
I think it is a waste or resources and energy.

Only resources it waste is one form of energy, and thats electricity. Since the navy started developing railguns, it has decreased power usage. The more they develop it, the more efficient it becomes.

Benefits of railguns:
No propellants - Able to carry more warheads since you don't have to store propellants - Safer since of not having to store extremely highly flammable propellants
Faster firing rates - You don't have to extract a spent cartridge (which contains the propellants) case from the breech and you don't have to first load the propellant charge and then the warhead.
Longer range - Less bullet drop and less wind drift since you are firing them at much greater velocity - Greater velocity also means greater range.
More efficient
Cheaper since all you need are war heads. You can practically fire anything out of it as long as its metal.

Edit:

It simply launching a projectile at an extremely fast velocity and lets kinetic energy due all the work. No need for propellants or explosives. The more energy you pump into it, the stronger it becomes. It is the future of weaponry. Also, railguns are being looked at as a cheap way of launching objects into orbit.

Right now the biggest issue is something the article touched on, making the rail system last longer. The heat that's generated erode the rails over time. But the technology has improved in the last couple of generations. When they first started research, the rails only lasted long enough for a single shot before they needed to be replaced. Now they can fire ten rounds per minute off of a single rail.

Edit:
Whats cool, you can make your own home made railgun. Here's a cool clip of someone who made one with just batteries that fires a small piece of aluminum foil:

Call me when I can hold it with 2 hands, and when I can change the colors to pink and light blue.

Too bad those guns are decommissioned and sitting in the harbor about 10 miles away from me. It's a museum now.

I'm aware of that.  I'd still take one over a rail gun right now.  Because of it's extreme muzzle velocity, the rail gun will have a realitivly flat trajectory. The Iowa class battleships can fire 2700lb projectiles in an arch trajectory over the horizon(~26 mi). If the ship is within it's firing range from a rail gun, the rail gun would have to fire through the earth to hit the ship or else it would overshoot.  Also the Mark 7 16" gun can fire nuclear ordinance.  Line of site applications it a whole different story.  It's the perfect space cruiser weapon.

Maybe just me, but the sound from the gun on the inside sounds like a half-life grenade.

I would be more impressed if they could make a 9v operated hand gun that could push straw through 12 layers of steel, oh yeah baby! biggrin.gifthumb.gif

Ideally I think they are trying to move away from the need for large amounts of gunpowerder, which to me is a plus, at least they are exploring options.
