[TH] Japanese Firm To Build Space Elevator - Page 13

Between this and the advancements in synthetic biology, Kim Stanley Robinson really hit the nail on the head in his Mars Trilogy.

The Future is Privatively owned space rockets that you can fly out of any location without the extreme cost of fuel but a different source of energy.

it is our current financial and economical system that makes it impossible to build.

Gotta laugh at all the GHD's moaning about how impractical this is according to their vast store of technical knowledge lol

Or the people who seem to assume that since it's called an elevator... it's the same as a generic building elevator lol, and that it wouldn't be setup to house those 30 people with all the comforts of home (with an eye to saving weight of course). Sleeping quarters, lounge, viewing area. Who knows how a crew quarters module would be setup for a space elevator. The only limits are the weight the cable can handle traveling on it.

The only truly terrible thing about this thread is it's these technophobic illiterates who are shaping our future. Appalling.

Space is the future, and I cringe at the number of people who would doom our species to obscurity and inevitable extinction here on earth.

putting the counterweight at 96,000Km makes no sense here, at max it would be a few more Km (1,000ish) and just be very heavy. Having 4 cables up the the platform would allow for elevator cars that climb two cables at a time and could be very large, then at the top transfer over to the other two cables so a constant stream of cars could be going up the cable and back down. As for everyone saying how much It would need to be anchored if you did the setup right and kept the counterweight force nearly balanced with the weight of the cable-car system it wouldn't have to be anchored too heavily if it had been initially spun up, just enough to prevent the weather from affecting it. Considering the amount of tension on a cable of this size I would think any sort of plane crashing into it would just be cleaved in half, not the other way around. Even if the base station was blown up then the main station could cut the counterweight loose/ pull it into the station and use emergency thrusters to stabilize its orbit so no danger of it flying off into space forever. The physics behind it is quite simple, but the materials and money needed are mind boggling rolleyes.gif

While The Idea is great, and make MUCH more sense than rockets, Structurally it doesnt seem like it will work,

I know what you mean.

What they should do is dig a massive hole through the center of earth, then people can jump in on one side and build so much speed on the way they shoot out the bottom and into space...

Perhaps have a big pillow to catch them once they get there.

Assuming no air resistance you'd have almost 0 velocity at the other side of the tunnel and wouldn't even need a pillow to catch you. smile.gif

Gundam 00 anyone LOL?

Imagine all the possibilities with this thing. Once this is built humans will finally have a foothold in space, leading to mars and all kinds of other places. It'll be like the 1800's again!
