150 years ago we did not have 95% of the technology we have today. For this to work the way with work and equipment we use have to change. This is so big it could even be called the Elevator age.

Like, how would they get that counterweight into space? If it were done anytime in the near future I have a feeling it would involve $50 billion worth of rocket fuel.

Does the counterweight need to be made with materials from Earth? Just carve out a giant chunk of the moon, or a moon from another planet and bring it over to Earth. I'm sure that is a naive explanation, but the gist of my point is that maybe the materials could be brought from somewhere else to prevent having to take up that much mass in rockets from Earth.

This is stupid and unrealistic. I vote that Japan put its collective ingenuity and industriousness back into making top notch cars and electronics, and if they want to do something crazy they can make Ai Shinozaki robots. thumb.gif

For everyone panicking that the spire gets unattached, solution?

266

People have been working for years on a single person re-entry vehicle.

That is not enough for you? How bout a escape pod, no different than a Soyuz capsule used for the ISS escape pod. At the mid station place a pod (or a few, pending on estimated load) and once again at the zenith station.

In my mind, hearing the phrase "space elevator" immediately triggers "The Fountains of Paradise" response.
