Think about it. It takes ~ 8 Days ~ 200KM/H to get to the TOP. How long will it take to build? 100 years? 200 years?

Lol, would have to get some ODST's to come in and try to take them out.

If something caused it to fall it could wrap around the earth 2 times...this just doesn't seem realistic.

I'll bet he first time someone attempted to build a large-scale bridge there were super engineers such as yourself trying to shoot it down before it was even started.

The question here is why do you hate progress?

Other scenario: The anchor indeed being ripped from earth, along with a piece of continent. Hey didn't Luxembourg use to be here?

Imagine the practical weight of the counter weight needed to obtain the required pull. Then earth's rotational speed factored by this arm of 96K miles. How the hell would people get up sufficient mass at such a locationof 96K miles, and then, get the wire up there? Last thing they need is the wire collapsing back to earth under its own weight.

I would assume building the wire has to start in space not too far off earths gravitational pull, in two directions. You'd want the weight be syncronous to earth's orbit and not leave it out in space, only to come by it next year. The whole structure has to be constructed in close vincinity of earth, otherwise fastening up the wire's ends is going to be impossible.

The terminal station contains the nanotube manufacturing equipment; it's boosted into geosynchronous orbit over the spaceport. Then the nanotubes are manufactured both "up" and "down simultaneously, so that the terminal remains at the center of gravity.

Wikipedia article, including discussion of the physics behind the concept

Think the Japanese got that concept from Gundam 00 for space elevators. Don't know how this will be feasible.
