Overclock help 6870

Thread Starter
I have bee trying to overclock my Asus 6870 Direct CU 1 GB using smart doctor. I have had it @ 950 / 1100 1.20 volts for a while now, and now i wanted to push it further. I did some tests in 3DMark 06 just changing the resolution setting to 1920x1080 and got score 20381 running at those speeds to have a base stat.

Now i started pushing a bit and upped voltage and just core to see how much further it would go. and this is what i got.

1. 950/1100 @ 1.2V 70% fan score: 20381 Max temp: 68c

2. 965/1100 @ 1.225V 70% fan score: 20523 Max temp: 70c

3. 980/1100 @ 1.231V 70% fan score: 20544 Max temp: 70c

4. 987/1100 @ 1.231V 70% fan score: 20603 Max temp: 70c

5. 997/1100 @ 1.231V 70% fan score: 20480 Max temp: 71c

6. 1002/1100 @ 1.231V 70% fan score: 20508 Max temp: 71c

Here is my problem why is my score getting no higher and actually getting a bit lower with higher clocks?
shouldnt it be getting hotter?

How far can i push my card? i have Stock DirectCU cooler.

Rest of my rig is:
M4A87TD-Evo
4GB Kingston HyperX
955BE @ 4GHZ 1.4vcore Watercooled
550w PSU

I found that once you start ocing a 6870 that high you have to be very aware of your temps. Now while 71c is perfectly acceptable i found that at higher OCs mine would act up over 70c. Any thing below that and the OC stayed solid. This was the case with 2 different cards, a HIS and a Powercolor. Both reference. I believe it is just how they function. You have a pretty dang good OC at that 987. Id be happy there.

Well there is such thing as over overclocking. It may be stable, but not effective. Also don't those cards start at around 920 ish??? you shouldn't have needed to up your volts that much yet.
