Refurbished Video Cards - where do they come from?

Thread Starter
Well so I just got my EVGA 570 refurb.. my first nvidia card and my first purchased refurb, and I didn't really have any expectations.

The card visually looks brand new, it even has the scratch-protective plastic layer on top of the stickers. The circuitry looks clean, and 6pin power connecters show no visible use, and there is not a single speck of dust anywhere. The screw threads are clean and show no tampering, nothing stripped at all.
What gives? The card looks BRAND new.
Are these refurbished video cards basically "open box"? People purchase directly from EVGA, open the box and ask for a refund? Are they like a less-than-average batch of 570s?

Just curious smile.gif I want to know the origin of my new 570.

Warranty returns. They test the card, replace what's broken and clean it up.

Sometimes new cards are bad out of the box. It gets fixed and sent out as refurb.

Depends

Sometimes they are repaired broken cards, sometimes they are NOS, and sometimes they cards that were wrongfully returned even though nothing was wrong with them.

I am sure its a bit of all of the above. They more than likely have cards that were returned that didn't post and someone returned it. Minor fixes and sold as b-stock.
