Why Windows 8 Will SELL SELL SELL!!! - Page 2

Not in it's current form. Microsoft is heading for the biggest blunder in it's history. Windows 8 isn't easy to use, not even remotely. With all of the hot corners, undocumented shortcuts, touch-centric navigation, hidden settings, and extremely poor way it prevents information very few people are going to take the time to learn it.

In it's current form it reminds me a lot of Gnome Shell, only on meth. Its like Microsoft contracted the Amish to design Windows 8 based on the same principles. The general ideas are there, but since most Amish have never even used a computer the execution is severely lacking.

I thought Microsoft learned from the transition from Vista to 7 that people want a lean, uncluttered, non-intrusive UI. I guess they fired all of those people when they brought in the WP7 design team to work on Windows.

The whole design philosophy behind Windows Phone was "glance and go". The phone was just something you used briefly for a specific task and then put away. That works great for a phone, since its a peripheral device, not something you use for more than 10-15 minutes. But that's not how we use our PCs. The UI simply isn't designed for longer sessions, so "glance and go" will translate to people glancing at Windows 8 then going all the way to the Apple Store to buy a Mac, that's assuming any OEMs will even put Windows 8 on their laptops.

Source: I'm using Windows 8 right now.

I'd bet Canonical is drooling in anticipation of the Windows 8 release. I wouldn't be surprised if they are already in contact with OEMs about putting Ubuntu on desktops and laptops. Microsoft is likely going to spend the next few years vainly trying to convince users that they aren't totally incompetent, and as Windows 7 ages Linux adoption will likely increase. Canonical has the resources to push into the home market, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Red Hat and Debian pushing corporations to switch to Linux, since they'll have to rewrite their apps in WinRT anyway.

I'm running Windows 8 on my pc, and I can say I don't think people will buy it if they are already using Windows 7. It is still not particularly mouse friendly (there are a couple of mouse gestures, which work, but are not particularly intuitive). There is no start button. I'm ok with that because I enjoy learning new ways to interact with a computer. But for people who have been using Windows since 95, I can't see them wanting to completely re-learn how to navigate the OS. The metro desktop is cool, but I can think of very few reasons why it is desirable for a desktop user. Thus, Windows 8 may sell great for tablets, but I don't expect people to buy it as an upgrade for their PC.

I agree with you on almost everything there! [except Gnome- I really like gnome 3 biggrin.gif ]
This could be a big opportunity for alternatives to Windows that offer, comparatively, a more standard desktop environment. It might be difficult for groups like Canonical to get in with large OEM's though, since many are already on board with Windows 8.

Obviously it's going to sell like mad in the Mobile Markets...

For a desktop though, yeah, big fail, for sure...

Businesses wouldn't touch this OS with a 10 foot pole!

Essentially I think Microsoft wanted to contend for the OS of choice in the Mobile markets...

But I'm not biting it will even get more than a glance from serious computer professionals..

I truely believe microsoft is making a big fat fail by making windows 8. They are flushing a great thing down the toilet. The switch from XP to vista it was like MS took 5 big steps backwards.....but they intended it to be a move forward. But as people discovered it was garbage. I've only known a whole 3 people who LOVE vista. While I think windows 8 will work well for phones and tablets....pushing it onto desktops will make people run back to the apple store....or to linux open source based OS's. Like someone else said, look at it and forget it is what they were going for.....and the problem is that people WONT forget it, instead they will all boo and jeer it. I know for a fact that after looking at the pictures of it I will NOT be upgrading to it. Windows 7 made pcs easy, pretty, smooth on resources and in general more enjoyable, I predict windows 8 will ultimately be vista with a new gui, which will mean epic fail. SIGH. Microsoft youve once again lost me here. Does anyone remember how smooth xp was to use, vs vista? I'm certain that people will equate windows 8 to vista.....sluggish, unresponsive, eats your system resources, and generally pisses you off. Whereas 7 was to XP....easy to use, responsive, lighter on your systems resources and helpful. Gamers will be very unsatisfied with a mobile look gui OS, this I promise you MS!
