Quick question about 6850's

Thread Starter
Seeing as the new lineup is rolling out from AMD and Nvidia.

Now I currently have a Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 1g card. Just the good old plain jane. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102908

Stock clocks.
Core Clock. 775Mhz
Mem Clock. 1000Mhz

Now, my question would be/thinking about doing is picking up a 2nd one of these cards. Why you ask? Well... to be honest I just don't want to spend a ton on the newest cards yet, and if I have 2x6850's then I can wait for prices to come down, and be set for the next year. why the next year, well I just bought a house so I would rather put up a garage, fence in the yard yada yada... you know keep the wife happy smile.gif

My current 6850, seem's to OC like a champ! On stock voltage, it runs stable at 925Mhz core and I think 1500Mhz mem. I will boot up my rig in a bit and get the exact figure's.

So, if I get a 2nd 6850, crossfire them, and OC both to 925Mhz core and 1500Mhz mem, would this be a solid combo? Or should I just try to persuade my wife to let me get a XFX 6970 2g Rev. 1.2 card?

the 6850's are still a great power packing card, only issues is the driver issues but thats hit or miss usually and it goes for all cards on AMD and Nvidia sides. get another one and enjoy it smile.gif

you'll perform better then a 6970 in Crossfire on 6850's at 1080p resolution but as the resolution goes beyond that the 6970 creeps up

It will perform better in benchmarks, but you will have to deal with microstuttering.

For the most part, I play BF3. My main rig is strictly gaming. All thought, OCing and benching is becoming a fun past time smile.gif

I've been rockin' 6850s in x-fire for a while now and I'll always recommend them. There's simply no other way to get the performance increase that you'd see for the 140 bucks a 2nd 6850 would cost you. There are only a few games that you won't be able to fully max out - BF3, Crysis 2, Metro 2033 (though damn close w/ Metro), and even on those games you can get so close to max that it's not even an issue.

he can max crysis 2 out if he fiddles with the Tessellation in the Catalyst drivers as Crysis 2's Tessellation agrorithm is unoptomized and what not or he can shut off the Tessellation which gives him a great boost in performance.

How did you OC your 6850 to 925mhz? I have the same brand/model and i'm using MSi Afterburner to tweak it, but it won't let me OC past 850mhz and 1200mhz on the memory freq.

I still pretty pleased with my SLI 460s so xfire 6850s should probably hold up well for a while.

the price of that gpu is almost as much as some of the 6870s. i would go with the 6870 since there aren't really issue with crossfiring them.
