Any gain to be had over 3000mhz NB? - Page 3

What is the amount of testing you would like to see me do to be comfortable saying the OC is "probably" not the problem? I've got memtest somewhere around here on a disk, should I run LinX as well?

My temps at 55c (according to coretemp) is fine for a workload of this nature is it not? I probably won't be upping the vcore anymore though. You would mind telling me what you NB voltage is at? I upped mine from 1.10 to 1.11 when I moved the CPU v down from 1.5 to 1.47. I do not know if it has any effect.

I will have to upgrade my case first before I can consider a pump and radiator. I have actually been looking to do so recently. I'd like to sell my case before I buy another, though I doubt anyone is going to want a mere used Antec 300. I have been looking at "Silent" case options like the Antec P280, though I am wondering if these types of cases will add to a heat problem with the insulation, specially if I am going to consider folding on the side. Also, what type of efficient/quiet fans would you recommend, I have been looking at the Cougar fans on newegg, but feel like these may be more design/hype then anything. But they did get good reviews.

I plan to work on my computer/look at parts all night tonight so ill be monitoring this post tonight, and will probably bounce some ideas off you.

For me I run a lot of LinX and MemTest when testing a new OC due to my Ram is always OC'd. For system stability I'd stay with a 24 hr run of Prime95 as a final word, but use 10 runs of either LinX or ITB before hand just to get an idea. If you have any freezing it's probably Dram voltage (try first) and if it plain just fails without BSOD try a little CPU/NB voltage. I still use Prime95 to determine what and how to adjust for the finial haul thou.

I trust you're talking about the actual core temperature correct? If so yes 55c is a good (for stability reasons) goal to shoot for.
These are what I recommend for fans http://www.dangerden.com/store/gentle-typhoon-120mm-fan-1850rpm-ap-15.html unbeatable for static pressure and so quiet. Yes, pricey and hard to find sometimes but these are some awesome fans. Read more here http://www.overclock.net/t/807428/official-scythe-gentletyphoon-club

Here's a snip of HWMonitor Pro under load while running at the end of a 28 hr prime95 run I finished this morning. It shows the max, min and current levels. Look at the max core temp using a Rasa kit. You have to realize my OC is probably a little more extreme (292 x 14.5) as are the NB Freq and Dram. I run Load Line Calibrating at 100% for both CPU and CPU/NB so what I have manually entered in bios (Vcore 1.482v, CPU/NB 1.442v, NB 1.3v) is lower than what it shows under load (but only under load counts). This creates a need for added (actual NB voltage) Do not confuse this with CPU/NB voltage which you should be adding for the higher NB Freq at this point. Typically you don't need much above 1.2v for actual NB voltage till you get above a 260-265MHz Ref Clock.

Okay, it looks like my Frio is doing what I paid for it to do, but hitting my limits.

Just so we are on the same page with Voltages (current/stock). CPU 1.47/1.4ish, CPU/NB 1.35/1.3v, NB 1.10/1.0, my DRAM at 1.6v with all timings at stock, and just a slight OC over 1600 with the ref clock bumped to where it is.

I am having a hard time determining where to go from here because it is getting hard to replicate the crash. I think it could also be client side with the program as well. Like I said, when and IF it did crash it would be while folding and gaming with all the folding clients on GO. Once it BSOD and the other two times it gave a graphical freeze like I had overclocked my GPU's to far (GPUs not OC'd in this instance).

I will have to set some time aside to run a 24 hour prime test. So you run LinX as a precursor to your Prime testing, to see if it is somewhat stable before you put it through a long prime test? Is that your logic? You mentioned 10 runs of LinX, how long does this usually take?

I have heard much praise about those fans around the web, I will check them out. Do you have any thoughts on those "silent" cases with the insulation and it bringing heat problems with me wanting to fold?

That sounds like your in line (close anyway)

I think the longer tests will help the issue show it's face, by the way Prime95 fails later in the test then what you've been so far.

So you run LinX as a precursor to your Prime testing, to see if it is somewhat stable before you put it through a long prime test? Is that your logic? You mentioned 10 runs of LinX, how long does this usually take?

Yes I like to use LinX both before as you mentioned, and after. I just installed an 8GB pack of Ram (only ran 4GB till now) and I think 10 runs runs was around 30-35 minutes? Start out with even a 5 run pass to get an idea.

I will say I know nothing of the case you're referring too, but if it's insulated and quiet, IMHO that means it runs hot. Not my first choice for a folding rig. I ran 24/7 during the chimp challenge and couldn't imagine doing it with less air flow.

I'd bump that NB up to 1.26
Most people stop @ 3000 cpu/nb because of stability issues..(It isn't stable no matter the voltage)@ much over that..ymmv

Can I ask why 1.26? Just curious.

I will stay away from the quiet cases, and purchase better fans instead for quietness. I guess I can't sacrifice cooling for what I plan to do. Thanks for sticking around and helping. My hope is to be rock solid stable by the end of this and pass it on in the future!

If you are bored ha, I am welcome to suggestions or your likes on cases up to 150 dollar range. If not, check back later after I am able to run some tests.

Because ..It's what works.I've been doing it so long I forgot why, sorry. redface.gif
I also screw a fan into the side of my case and aim it @ the nb heatsink..

Well this passed 50 runs of IBT on maximum. I'll try some Large FFTs next.

What surprised me is that my Max vcore went up to 1.57v. (Set at 1.47v) This board having vdroop is nothing new to me, though that amount is new to me. CPU-Z never reported that type of jump in voltage under load. The most it would jump up to under CPU-Z at this setting was 1.52v.
Is this going to be a problem?

Keep an eye on it. I too see a couple of spikes while testing only. These are usually very short, like only a second in my rig. Might be due to temps getting close too, the hotter it runs the more voltage it'll want. Using HWMonitor you could run a graph on the next test (for maybe 20 minutes) and look at the voltages in graph form. In HWMonitor click tools, than logs, than start log. It'll save it in the HWMonitor folder under results i think it's called. You might learn something there.

Random question. Do you recommend me getting a different motherboard due to this large vdroop? I am still able to return it if necessary. Any thoughts on the matter?
