q6600 OC with H80

Thread Starter
So I just installed my H80 and decided to bump up my overclock. With my TRUE I was getting close to these temps with a 3.2-3.3ghz overclock. I managed to get it stable at 3.6ghz with just under 1.4volts in bios, 1.384v in cpuz.

320

So do the temps look good? Ignore the 75 degrees max temp, that was from a intel burn test run. Prime 95 doesn't push it much past 66 degrees. As far as the difference in temps between the cores, I think that's just the way the chip is as it always showed a temp difference through multiple seats of my TRUE and other coolers.

As far as I could tell a lot of people are saying 71degrees is the max temp for GO chips, and supposedly most require 1.4 to 1.45v to get 3.6ghz.

This is pretty much just to hold me off till Ivy bridge, when this becomes a backup rig I plan to reduce it to a 3ghz overclock.

Realtemp gives me 39 degrees to the tjmax, but I don't think its set up correctly because the tjmax is set to 100. But it does seem around average, plus it won't be running this hot during normal applications.

I love this chip though, its a tank. Almost makes me want to wait a month or so after ivy launches (but not really).

I haven't tried any games yet though because Im still testing it. I will soon though, skyrim should run nicely but I think it's BF3 where it will really shine.

Tjmax is either 90 or 95 but 100 is wrong, take 5C off those temps at least and that's your real temperature.

I had a chip that took 1.37V to do 3.6GHz, it made it to 4.2 for benching. It hits 65 under load in prime95 and 75 in LinX on a tuniq tower 120 as far as I remember so it's about 5C hotter than yours and the tuniq is pretty decent.

I used to use 85C as my limit in IBT or LinX as nothing else will get that hot so I'd say you've still got some room, most Q6600s need a lot of voltage to get from 3.6 to 3.8 though so 3.6GHz is a nice point to stop at.
Those are very good temperatures and the Q6600s are tanks so that'd be fine for years. thumb.gif

Edit: And BF3 on a Q6600 is pretty nice. smile.gif
You'd never believe they were released over five years ago. biggrin.gif

no no no (;

the distance to tjmax is the REAL sensor value and the actual temp shown is just beeing calculated from distance to tjmax..
so if the "distance to tjmax" do not go under 25 under ibt/linx youre on the safe side! thumb.gif

@Mike-IRL I see your still rocking a q6600, are you waiting for Ivy too?

My main reason for getting the H80 was for my planned Ivy upgrades but overclocking a q6600 is a nice test of the H80's abilities. I don't think it would be able to handle 3.8 though.

Ok so the tjmax is 71, I set that for all 4 cores. It shows 36-31 degrees from the tjmax.

Edit: nvm google search tells me that the tjmax is 90 for the q6600

Well, it's dependant on what voltage your Q6600 needs for 3.8GHz.
3.6 is enough for just about anything anyway so the slight increase in speed mightn't be worth the added power consumption and heat.

I'm very tempted to upgrade to Ivy, I've actually ordered RAM from newegg and friend of mine in the states is bringing it back when he comes over for spring break so I'll probably either buy Ivy or pick up a sandybridge chip that clocks well after ivybridge is released and there are some secondhand 2500/2600Ks out there.

I had a p5e with a rampage bios by the way, those boards are nice. BIOS controls for everything. tongue.gif
